The bell rang and the school day ended. Philip helped his young students pack up their stuff and told them to remember to look at the tag on their bag to remember which bus they're going on, as well as reminding them their will be plenty of staff outside to help them.
He led the few kids getting picked up by their parents to the pick up circle and reminded them that they have to tell him if they see their parents.
The five kids with him, Luke, Sam, Charlie, Sarah and Katie, are picked up fairly early, all except Katie, who ends up being one of the last few students waiting for their parents.
Philip could see the tears in Katie's eyes, and could take a good guess at the frantic thoughts flying through her mind. She kicked her legs; her small feet didn't touch the ground from the bench they were sitting on.
"It's ok, Katie, your Dad is just a bit late. I'll stay with you until he gets here." Philip said, patting her back.
Katie sighed. "He wanted to pick me up on my first day, but he works a lot. Now my nanny will have to come get me."
"Do you not like your nanny?" Philip asked.
"I like her, she plays with me and she's funny, but she isn't my Dad." Katie said.
"Well if whoever's coming to get you isn't here in a few minutes, I'm going to have to call them." Philip said.
Katie nodded, and didn't say anything.
A few minutes passed, and Philip stood up. The few teachers outside with them filed their last kids into the office to make phone calls to parents. Philip helped Katie up and they walked into the office.
After asking the secretary for his number, Philip diled George Eacker's work phone. Katie stood next to him, waiting patiently.
It rung a few times before George picked up.
"Can I help you?" George asked. He sounded in a hurry.
"Hello, this is Katie's teacher-"
"Hamilton, right? I'm coming to get her right now, I'll be there in a few minutes."
Georges hung up the phone before Philip could reply.
"He's on his way." Philip told Katie. She nodded in approval.
In a few minutes a black car rolled up, and George stepped out.
"Daddy!" (Don't make this kinky, I'm warning you) Katie exclaimed, running to hug her Dad.
Georges embraced her, and held her on his hip as he approached Philip.
"Sorry for taking so long, I got caught up at work." George apologized.
"It's fine, she wasn't a bother. She's quite smart for someone her age." Philip said. Katie grinned at the compliment.
"We should get going, Katie-cat, Peggy is probably worried sick." George said to Katie, walking towards their car.
Katie waved at Philip over George's shoulder, who waved back.
'What an odd family.' Philip thought.
