Monday Blues

The weekends always go by way too fast. Sunday was such a blur considering I slept most of it. The sunrise was definitely worth it though.

I stopped for my usual cup of coffee on my way to work. As I reached into my wallet for my debit card, I pulled out a small piece of paper.

Sam Lancaster 501-9901

Sneaky little Sam. Looks like I do have his number after all.

"Miss? Your coffee?" The barista called out.

"Right, sorry." I handed her my debit card. I have to stop thinking of Sam. I wasn't interested when I met him. No point wasting time. It's just the way he made me feel. Or was it the wine and sunrise?

I started my walk to work hoping the fresh air would clear my head. The sidewalks were packed with people making their way to their jobs. Mondays are the worst day of the week. You could see the misery on everyone's face. Back to reality.

I walked into the office and began studying my current cases. Divorce after divorce. What's the point? I don't see why people try any more. I've watched so many families be torn apart and fighting over something as petty as the cups in their kitchen cabinets.

Hours went by and I noticed the sun was starting to disappear from the sky. I had thrown all of my focus into my work in an attempt to push Sam out of my mind. That's when my phone dinged. A text lit up on the screen.

Don't work too late... you know we have plans!

I looked at the clock and realized it was 7:00. I was supposed to meet Erica for our usual Monday night dinner at 7:30. I do need a break from all of this heartache on paper. I really don't know why I put myself through this. I always hurt so much for the people whose lives have been torn apart and they now need someone to step in and tell their once significant other exactly how much of the marriage is theirs. I shuddered at the thought. Living your life thinking everything is great and your future holds so much more, then one day you come home to a broken marriage and thousands of dollars spent on mediation and court fees only to start your life over in a constantly changing world.

My phone began to vibrate pushing the thoughts away. It was Erica.

"Hey, I'm walking out now." I said picking up the phone.

"Good girl! I've added our names to the waitlist. See you in 10?'

"I'll be there."

Luckily it was just a short walk to the restaurant and I arrived just as they were calling for our table. Erica gave me a quick hug and we followed the hostess to our booth.

This was my favorite place to go for after work drinks or dinner, anything really. They always had live music and Monday nights it was blues and jazz. The soothing music always helped wash away the stress from work.

"So, dish! Julie told me about your late night rendezvous!" She squealed with excitement.

I smiled down at the menu hoping she wouldn't see me blushing. "Where is Jules? She's supposed to be bartending tonight."

"Nice try changing the subject." She rolled her eyes.

Just then I spotted Julie at the bar and waved to her. She walked over with a tray holding a vodka martini for Erica and a vodka water for me.

"Lifesaver! Thanks, Jules!" I was hopeful that the subject of Sam would dissipate since our drinks had arrived.

"So did you tell Erica about your gentleman caller the other night?" She winked at Erica. I knew I'd never get out of this one.
