Chapter 1
"Lucas!" the teacher snapped making my head jolt up. I glare up at her, sitting on her pedestal at the front of the room. Her sharp nose, no matter how big, can not conceal the scowl that seemed to be constantly plastered to her face. Her voice was an obnoxious squeal of a call that caused my head to pound.
"Mrs. Johnson!" I mimicked in a similar tone.
She glared at my behavior, "Is my class not interesting to you, Giver?"
The more she spoke the more I felt like I was going to be sick. She knew nothing about my life and never showed an ounce of interest to learn. So I would give her the same respect she gave me. "Bingo."
"You just expect that with your lack of knowledge you'll pass with flying colors on the ACT, don't you?" a girl snickered next to me. Her coal colored hair flowed over her eyes and face making her appearance ghostly. Her black hair flowed down to her waist and her skin looked like it had been covered with flour. I was surprised I haden't noticed her eerie presence next to me earlier and now that I had seen it, I couldn't look away or forget her ghostly shadow looming on to my desk.
"I don't need to score well, I'm already excepted," I snapped at her as the teacher continued with the lesson thinking that she won our little bickering.
"To clown school," she added.
At that exact moment the the bell rang throughout the room signaling the end of class. The girl shot up from her seat and ran to the door. I dashed after her, my blood boiling over the edge. When I made it to the busy the hall, I lost sight of the small black haired girl.
I took one last look around before giving up and preceding down the hall to my friends.
Suddenly a crash shot through the air but no one silenced or turned to see where it came from. My head jerked toward the noise as my eyes came upon two girls and Ms. Black Hair. She was scrunched up on the floor against the lockers, her thin body had been tossed hard onto the metal doors. Liz and Chloe towered over her. Chloe bent down, "Don't talk to Luke. He's too good for the likes of you. You depressing waste of space."
"What's going on here?" I cut in Liz and Chloe turned in surprise. They were no more than two of the bitchy girls who think they're the top of the world.
Liz and Chloe's heads shot in my direction, stunned, "H-hey Luke! Don't worry about this, it doesn't mean anything to you"
"Leave her alone. If I want to talk to someone I will talk to them. If there is anyone here that I don't want to talk to it would be you two." I gazed down at her. She hadn't risen her head. My knees bent allowing me to come to her scrunched up height, "Hey, you okay?"
No answer.
"Hey," I said with a slight shake to her shoulder.
No answer.
Her eyes were closed, blanketed by long dark eyelashes. No movement came and a string pulled in my stomach as I feared for the worst. My arm slipped under the bend in her legs, the other on her back, "Move," I ordered the two away. The halls moved to the side, clearing a pathway to the nurse's office. She was light, I almost forgot that I was holding all her weight. It wasn't until now that I noticed how skinny she really was. Her skin was warm against mine as I shielded her from stubborn students too stupid to move.
When I got there Mrs. Smith rushed to me. She showed no recognition to me but when she got to me she whispered, "What has happened to you, Kai? You cant keep this up."
So Kai was her name. The odd name suited her well. Mrs. Smith gazed up to me with worried eyes, "Who did this?"
I sighed deciding to tell her, "Two girls, Liz and Chloe."
Her expression hardened. She gestured to a bed in the corner, "Not them again... Put her down over there, please."
I did as I was told but one question hung in my mind, again? How much does the happen? Suddenly my mind wondered back to the scene in the hall only moments earlier, how she had been injured and bullied but no one looked or worried about her. It was normal to them. It was sickening to me. "Excuse me but, what do you mean by again?"
Her hand froze on Kai's forehead, "Could you get me that cloth over there, wash it with water, not too cold but cool," I turned looking for what she was talking about but I could find nothing. She got up and did it herself, silently complaining under her voice, something about the young being useless, "How do you know Kai? Are you a friend?" I hesitated not knowing how to answer. I was no better then the two other girls. When I ran after her I had every intention of making her day worse, making her feel like a piece of shit. In a way I was worse then them because here I am pretending to be her friend, "I already knew the answer. " She cut off my thoughts of self loathing. She waltzed across the room with a certain grace to the ice bin and continued speaking through the crunch of ice, "She doesn't have any friends at school. Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one in this school who knows she's exist and isn't just a punching bag. I only know her because of her daily visits."
"Daily visits? Is she sick or something?"
She sighed after placing a ice bag on Kai's neck, "No, but don't disturb her, she is in well need of some sleep. If she doesn't let herself rest she'll fall ill like her father..." her eyes saddened but she still snapped, "Get to class, here," she pulled out a piece of paper and scribbled some words on it, "Hurry up, I wrote the time as well so don't go wondering around."
I hesitated for an instant wanting to know more about this girl who I have never known. She seemed so different from everyone else in this school. There was a certain story to her that there wasn't in others. I wanted to hear more but she ushered me out the door before I could resist.
