Chapter 9: Stabbed

“One could never guess what would happen within the span of one day.”

9:30 P.M.

“Why are there polices car parked outside my lawn?”

That was the first thing my mom asked after disappearing for two days. Last time I saw her was when Reece came to sleep over. Here we go.

“Because a serial killer’s after me,” I said dryly as I kept on switching channels. I can feel her eyes on me as she dropped her shopping bags and luggage on the doorway.

“Lucinda, are you being serious? Because you darling are giving me a heart attack.” She marched towards me pointing her index finger.

“Yes mom it’s true but don’t worry, the police will be there to check us all night.” I gave her space to sit on the divan.

“Lucinda, is this another prank on me because if this is you will be grounded for the rest of high school.” She said checking me as if I happen to miss any body parts. I still remember that prank I came up with when I was eight years old wherein I pretended to be dead when she woke me up for school. I was already on the hospital when I heard the doctor saying he has to inject some… I woke up and ran away that instant.

“Mom, I’m not eight anymore. I’ve been talking to the police even before you left and they promised me protection.” I stated the calmest way I can just to stop her from being hysterical.

“Why? What caused this? Does the police have suspects already? How do they know someone’s after you? Were you attacked?” She bombarded me with questions as she gradually tightened her embrace me.

“Mom, chill. The killer attacks once every month. So I’m sure it’d be next month and not tonight.” I said as I stroked her back.

“Next month? Why? Who died this month?” Her eyes were wide open in fear. Oh I hate seeing her like this. She really can’t take pressure as much as I can. It reminds of Tyler trying to protect me from little stressful moments. Now I know how he feels.

“Kendra.” I answered but with the questioning squint on her eyes I felt the need of further introduction. “The Kendra from six blocks away. My friend. Sleepovers with Kathy and Avery. Black girl. Only person in the world who loves your spaghetti. ” I answered.

“Oh my God. Ken and Alexis’s daughter? Oh Jesus Lucinda. Tell me what happened.”

“Yes mom. She was poisoned at homecoming. And then the police notified us that this serial killer has been killing those listed from the popularity bulletin from top to bottom. Two kids out of the list were killed too, maybe because one of them witnessed and told the other so…”

“How many are dead already?” She asked looking blankly at my face.

“Six”

“Oh Dear God.” She said as she massaged a vein in her temple. I also do that when I’m extremely stressed out too, just like this afternoon with Bryce at the diner.

“Who are you calling?” I asked as she leaped out from our comfy black leather divan and rummaged her bag to scroll her contacts.

“Hello Police Department? This is Mrs. Connors…Yes. I’m her mother… I’m requesting maybe five to six more officers to secure our perimeter… I don’t care if there are already four officers outside my house. I want more security inside… Thank you.”

“Mom, the whole situation is under control. You don’t need to scold the police department.” But she doesn’t listen to me and kept on scrolling her cell, now upwards.
