| Chapter One |

New York City. This is the place where it all started. In an apartment of a 20 story building. Our story begins with a girl, named Carter Vermilion. Her dream is to become an author, and mainly just make people happy for a living. She lives alone on the 16th floor, in apartment 1607, typing and editing her book that she is currently trying to perfect. She works a job as a barista, at a small cafe a few blocks away from her building. Her life was basically perfect. Not everything stays that way for long, though.

Carter, in the dark hours of the night, was walking home from her job at the cafe. She is lacking in sleep and accidentally makes a wrong turn, taking her to a quiet and deserted alleyway. "Huh? How did I get here?" She looks around, and becomes confused. "I must have taken a wrong turn back there...I'll just-" As she turns around, she notices that the way she came, has now been replaced with a wall, making it a dead end. "Wait... Didn't I just come through there? When was there a... A wall?" She turns back around to notice a figure standing in front of her. The headlights of moving cars passed behind them. "I'm terribly sorry ma'am but-" The person spoke, realising it belonged to a man, "I am afraid that you will have to come with me. There is not time to speak about this at the moment, so come on." A panicked look was placed upon Carters face. "Well? Come here. There is absolutely no time to be- What in the world are you trying to do, miss?" She was trying to climb the wall behind her. All he does is sigh, and walk over to the struggling female. "Love, please don't fool around. We have a very serious issue going on in a more important place than here." "Yeah, like you trying to kidnap me. I'm getting out of here" He grabs her off of the wall, and proceeds to put her down."Dear, do I look like I am here to do that?" She Looks him up and down, noticing that he is wearing a black suit, black dress shoes, and white gloves. His hair is perfectly parted, and slicked back, as well. "No..." She swallowed, and sighed. "but, then again, I don't exactly know what a kidnapper looks like, now do I? So, you could actually trying to kidnap me." He gives her a questioning look, and she crosses her arms. "Although, I do know that you're not one." He bends down to her level, casts a doubting face."Oh, do you now? Please tell me." She looks him in the eyes. "If you were, you would have done it already." He stands back up, and claps slowly. "Very smart, but we are just throwing our time away. We need to get to the city of Runebrace. It is in the Monster Realm, and we must get there immediately. You are not to say another word to me until we arrive at my home. Once we get there, we will meet up with one of my companions. I have some work to do before we can do anything." Instead of a nice and soft tone, every word had been laced with venom. "No!" She yelled at him, as she tried to run away. Something unfamiliar wraps around her stomach, and lifts her off the ground. "Let me go!" She starts to struggle and thrash around, but when she hits the thing holding her up, she goes silent. "What..." She lifts up her hand, and a trail of black goo is attached, and her palm is covered in it. She turns her head as far as it possibly could, to come face to face with a huge monster, made of the black goo, and a grin, going from ear to ear. "I will only ask once more, child." It sets her back down on the ground, but it still holds on to waist. "Will you help me? " He leans over her body, looking down at her. The goo body falls onto her head and shoulders, dripping down her back, face, and arms. She furiously nods. "Y-yes, sir." The monster turns back into the tall man that stood before her earlier. "Alright! Thank you for agreeing, now, we will head off to Runebrace to save my people." She becomes extremely confused, and just stands still in her place. All of the goo seemed to disappear into mist after he turned back into a human. While still processing what happened, he pulls her into a portal-esque gateway, and they arrive in what she thinks to be Runebrace, the place this man had been talking about the entire time. It was beautiful. Flowers grew in every crack and crevice, as well as large fields of them. Butterflies and animals were seen everywhere. Little cottages, filled with different kinds of people. 'This is Runebrace?' She thought. 'It's so beautiful.' She looks around some more, to find some people and creatures staring at her. "I'm sorry, but I never caught your name. I am Octivonius Aucterhaden, but please, call me Octivo." He looks her straight in the eye. "I'm, uh, Carter Vermilion. Just call me Carter, I guess...?" She reaches out, and offers a handshake. 'Man, why didn't he just do this before? It would've saved all of the weird stuff that happened...' She retracts her hand, and shoves them in her coat pockets. "Come on. I will lead you to my home." He says, leading her down the road, that was filled with unfamiliar faces, on unfamiliar people.

Yeah! My very first chapter of this story! I will try to update if you actually like it ( Even if you don't  I will still update it, haha ) as much as possible, but school just started, and I might be able to update about once or twice a week. I very much hope you like it so far!
