Interlude in Heartbreak

Visions passed before my eyes.

Titans and monsters in underground chambers. Half-bloods and Gods, on Manhattan streets and in burning shrouds. I think it might've been trying to tell me something, something about the war. But the woman wasn't there, and neither was my father. All it was was endless strangers.

Then she appeared.

We were suddenly on a bridge in New York. She looked sorrowful, like she was genuinely disappointed.

"Child," she said. "I wish it didn't have to be like this."

I stared at her.

"Maybe if you'd joined them, joined us..." she sighed. "Maybe something could've been different."

The conscious me wanted to pound against the walls of my head. I wanted to tell her nothing would've changed, but the words didn't come through.

"In the end, that's how it'll always be."

She came up to stand near me, so close I could smell her. She smelled like burnt meat and smoke.

"Unless you side with us."

Finally, my stare turned into a glare.

"This is your fault," I said. "Luke, Kiera, Lucas, everyone. You horrible, horrible monsters. This is your fault!"

Then, with all the lucidity I had in me, I shoved her.

She tumbled like a shooting star into the East River. If she saved herself before she landed, I didn't know. I woke first, and this time, I wished I could've stayed dreaming forever.
