“Stormy! Up!” I hear Lyss say. Lyss is my only friend, also, she’s sick and going to die in a month. “I only have a little bit until I have to be at the school and since it’s going to be a week I wanted to see you before I left. Awake though.”
I walk downstairs to find her eating a bagel. Any other person did this I’d be pissed, but with Lyss…I’m just happy she can eat without puking it back up. “I forget, what trip is this? Waste of time, or waste of space?” I say, she stuffs the last of the bagel into her mouth, picking up her bag and coming to hug me.
“I don’t get why you’re so against it. We get to go across city, close to the wall. You could’ve come but you are apparently now too obsessed with staying inside, and in those pajamas.” She says. I look down at myself, I’m just in black shorts and a grey tank top. I’m not obsessed with it, I just happen to be wearing it whenever she surprise visits me, which isn’t that often. We walk to the door together and step outside. We start walking to her bus stop a couple blocks away. She walks underneath her pink sparkly umbrella, I walk next to her letting myself get drenched by the rain.
“Where’s your coat? You could catch a cold if you’re out here without one.” I say. She sighs and frowns at me.
“What’s the point of being cautious anymore, Izzy? There isn’t one. You sound like my parents ‘don’t go on the trip, you could get worse.’ How much worse can I get? I die in a month, everyone should just let me do what I want.” She says angrily.
Lyss one of the best people I’ve ever met, she’s definitely the strongest. She isn’t afraid of anything, not even death. I don’t want her to go, but I know she’s ready for it. So I have to be there for her. “I’m sorry, it was just a reflex. You’re right though, you should get to do what you want for your last month on earth. So promise you’ll dye your hair pink while you’re over there. I remember how much you wanted to do that when we were kids.” Her frown disappears and is replaced by laughter.
“You are an absolute genius Izzy! My parents will freak, but who cares. I can’t believe you remember that.” She says, I shrug and smile as we reach the bus stop.
“You’re my best friend, of course I remember it.” I say, she smiles and hugs me tightly. The bus pulls up. What will I do without you here?
“I’ll come help you back when I get home.” She says, handing her bags to the driver. “You better do something fun while I’m gone, just don’t be too stupid.” She starts climbing up the bus steps.
“Same to you!” I call.
She laughs loudly, “No promises.” She calls back, the doors close behind her and the bus leaves. I wait until it goes around the corner before starting my slow walk back to my house. I’m completely soaked but I don’t care.
I cross the street onto my block, there’s a person leaning against my railing. I keep walking though, the build of the person tells me it’s a guy. He’s maybe a foot taller than me, it wouldn’t be hard to take him down quickly with little sound.
“I would suggest moving away. I’m not in the mood.” I say angrily, I don’t feel like living today. The figure laughs. I look at him annoyed and he pushes back his hood and….he’s, um, pretty good looking. He walks close to me. Closer than I’d like, but I don’t move away, there is no need. If anything happens I can break his arm. He takes a sip from a silver flask, he motions it to me. I laugh and shake my head.
