"It kind of creeped me out a bit." Sam had come into the station and told me about Maya coming to his house. "I thought I should tell you in case Maya had something to do with... you know."
"If you didn't change any of the information..." I started to say before Sam cut me off.
"I didn't. Everything was word for word of how it happened."
"Then it does raise some suspicion that me and my partner will look into."
"As soon as possible, please. If Maya hurt Riley, I want her in prison. I can't imagine anyone hurting my Riley. Please find the killer."
"Towning." My name was called and I looked up to see Chief Larson looking over at Alex. "I need to talk with you, please come into my office when you have a chance." Alex put down the file he was looking over and walked into the Chief's office.
"Sam, we will find out who killed Riley. I promise you I won't give up searching. But right now I need you to go home and let me do my job to find the truth." Sam walked out of the station and Alex walked out of Chief Larson's office.
"Alex," I called him over to my desk. "What did Larson want to see you for?"
"He decided that it's taking too long to find the serial killer and we can't waste any more time."
"Is he taking one of the cases from us?" I was worried that this might happen. I didn't want to lose either of our cases.
"No, he's called in the behavioral analysis unit from the FBI. They will take a look at what we have found and give us a personality to our killer."
"Any chance they will do a behavioral analysis on the person who killed Abby? They could tell us if it's the same killer or not."
"We'll figure it out. Do you know who the detectives were for that case?"
"No, but the files are in Larson's office. He would never tell us anything though."
"Well, he doesn't have to."
"What do you mean?" I was confused by what Alex was implying.
"I'll sneak in there when he goes home for the night. Just say we're working late."
"You want to sneak into the chief's office? You're crazy. That could get you fired."
"Probably, but we need to figure out what's happening with our daughter's case. We deserve closure. You know that if we weren't detectives we would know what was happening."
"You're right," I admitted. "Just, don't get caught. I don't feel like breaking in a new partner." Alex and I both giggled.
--That night--
"You guys still here?" Chief Larson asked as he came out of his office. "I thought everyone had left."
"Just looking over the files again. Looking for something we may have missed before." I spoke up.
"Alright, have a good night you too."
"Thanks, you too."
"Oh, and the Behavioral Analysts from the FBI will be here first thing tomorrow," Larson stated as he walked out the door.
"I'll be right back." Alex opened the chief's door and walked in. A minute later I heard him yell. "Em! You've gotta see this."
I walked into Larson's office to see Alex holding a case file with a file cabinet drawer open in front of him.
"Abby Towning and Jake Carson were presumably killed by the same killer as the serial killer murdering 15-year-old girls. The connection was made when a current detective revealed the killer was looking for what information had been found in the serial case." I read aloud. "You told Larson? I can't believe you!" I yelled at Alex.
"I had to. I had reason to believe that you were in danger, they killed Abby, I couldn't just stand by and let them get you when I knew I had information that could help. I did what I thought was right." Alex defended himself, but I was still mad.
"Well, I'm sure I'll be safe from now on. I'm going to go stay with Ryan for a while."
"You're kidding, right? You've barely seen know him at this point." Alex was getting annoyed.
"At-least I know he won't lie to me. And if the killer is after me, he won't know where to find me. That's what you want, right? To keep me safe?"
I stormed out of the station and called Ryan.
"Can I stay with you for a bit?"
"Of course. But, why?"
"I got into a fight with Alex, don't want to be near him right now."
"Yeah."
"Thanks, see you in a bit."
I hung up the phone and I sat down on the steps leading into the station. I looked out at the quiet street. It was dark so the street lights were on. There were no cars in sight except for our car parked off to my left."
"I'm really sorry." Alex was standing behind me a couple steps up.
"You've said that already."
"Do you need a ride to Ryan's?" I contemplated what Alex had just asked me.
"Yeah. But no talking."
The drive to Ryan's felt long considering it was only a 10-minute drive.
"I love you," Alex said as I stepped out of the car. "I'll pick you up tomorrow morning for work."
I didn't answer him. Instead, I slammed the car door shut and walked up to Ryan's door.
"Hey. Come on in."
The place was a bit messier than when I first came here. There was take out containers on the table, the sink was halfway filled with dishes, and the garbage can was overflowing. Other than that the place was pretty tidy.
"Thanks for letting me stay here," I tell him.
"No problem. I only have one bed, you can take it."
"No," I say forcefully. "This is your apartment, you take the bed, I'll take the couch. And don't try to argue with me because I'll win."
"Alright. I'll see you in the morning."
Ryan went to the bedroom and I heard the door shut. He had two pillows and a couple blankets folded up on the couch so it was easy for me to get it ready.
--Morning--
I was woken up by a knock on the door, so forceful and full of power. I assumed whoever it was had been knocking for a while. I got up and opened the door.
"Alex. What are you doing here?"
"We have work. It's 7:30"
"It's 7:30?" I quickly brushed out my hair and brushed my teeth before leaving with Alex about 10 minutes later. I was in such a hurry that I forgot to say goodbye to Ryan.
