"Gallie!" Mikiah shook my shoulder, making me lose my train of thought.
"What?" I asked, rubbing the back of my neck.
"We need to get to class." She spoke as she dragged me through the white and gold hallways, various pieces of paper littering the walls. Why would humans do that?I felt Mikiah let go of my hand as I inspected the walls. I turned my head quickly just as I collided with a door. I fell onto the ground with a thud, already picking myself back up. We quickly walked in the room, unrecognizable faces looking back at us.
My anxiety kicked in as I followed Mikiah to the oldest human, presumably the teacher, as he took the yellow pieces of paper in Mikiah's hand.
"Oh! You must be the new students, yes?" The man questioned. Mikiah and I both nodded our heads in unison.
"Excellent! I'm Mr. Polear. As you can see, I teach English." He introduced himself while he showed us to our seats. By now, most everyone had stopped looking at us. All except one.He sat near the teacher's desk, his head bowed down slightly, sandy curls almost covering his bright hazel eyes, and complementing his fair skin. He continued to look even after the older man started talking again. We locked eyes for a moment, before he turned around to pay attention to the class. I turned around as well, listening to everything around me.
The class had passed by faster than expected, Mikiah pulling me with her to every class until it was lunchtime. After Mikiah and I got our food, we found some of the others in our pack and sat with them. I hadn't seen the mysterious boy until then. He was sitting by himself, looking out into the field just beside the outdoor tables.
"He's really weird." one of the others, Tina, stated once she saw what had my attention. A chorus of agreements sounded through the table.
"How?" I inquired. I didn't know why, but he had somehow managed to spark my interest.
"He... He just is." another one, Amy, hesitated. Mikiah squinted at me, knowing that I was going to do something. So, I stood up, throwing away my half eaten food and sitting next to the boy.He looked at me quizzically, possibly trying to figure out why I was sitting with him. Honestly, I was trying to figure out myself. But, as I opened my mouth to speak, he beat me to it.
"Why are you here?" he muttered as he turned to face the field again, his accent thick, Australian maybe? I only shrugged as I watched some humans run around in the grass. After a few moments of awkward silence, he spoke up, "I'm Ashton". I nodded my head, processing the information for a second.
"I'm Gallie" I responded as I took in what he was wearing: black long-sleeved shirt, black skinny jeans, black shoes, and a black fedora. It was kind of depressing, really. Though he did strangely look attractive, even with all of the black clothing. We had continued to make small talk until the bell had rung, signaling the end of lunch. We said our goodbyes and went our separate ways. I didn't see Ashton for the rest of the day, but he never left my mind.
