'What's this?' Lana asked as she peered over Chloe's shoulder that Wednesday morning.
'This,' said Chloe, looking up from the stack of papers set out on the table before her, 'is my article for the Torch on everything weird and wonderful that happened in Smallville over the summer break.'
'Ah.' Lana smiled. 'What you got so far?'
Chloe sighed. 'Not a whole bunch. It's weird. Things have been pretty quiet of late.'
'Some might say that's not a bad thing,' Lana stated as she went back behind the counter. Her shift at the Talon was almost over that day, Skip was taking over for the afternoon and she was looking forward to some much needed time off.
Chloe had arrived a half hour ago and had sat with her nose in her work, looking up only when it was necessary. Lana admired her dedication. But there had been times when she wished her friend would switch off her roving reporter head and just be a friend.
'What you up to when you finish here?' Chloe asked biting into the sticky donut she had ordered and forgotten about until now.
Lana shrugged. 'I hadn't thought about it.'
'How about we drive into Harrisville? Have a girlie afternoon. Do some shopping.'
'I thought you were busy with your story?'
'I can finish it up tonight.'
'Okay,' nodded Lana. 'You're on.'
Just then Kennedy appeared from the kitchen carrying a tray of fresh sandwiches.
'Kennedy, Chloe and I are going into Harrisville for some retail therapy. Wanna come with?' Lana asked her.
'I think I'll pass,' said Kennedy, as she began to arrange the sandwiches neatly in the glass cooler beneath the counter. 'I'm trying desperately to save every cent I'm earning.'
'So window shop.'
Kennedy rolled her eyes. 'That's just cruel.'
'You bet,' agreed Chloe. 'It's like dangling candy beneath the nose of a small child and then snatching it away. Same applies to girls and shopping.'
Kennedy and Lana smiled at one another. 'Thanks for asking though,' said Kennedy.
'No problem,' Lana said, then she turned back to Chloe. 'So, are we looking for anything in particular? Like maybe something to wear for our big date this weekend?'
'Yeah,' grinned Chloe, thinking about Drake. 'Something cute, but hot. And definitely something that's going to make him want to ask me out again.'
'I think it's in the bag, Chloe,' Lana told her with a smile. 'From what I've seen he seems pretty keen.'
'He does, doesn't he?' grinned Chloe happily.
'I'd say the feeling was mutual.'
Chloe sighed and rolled her eyes dreamily. 'He's just so different to any other guy in Smallville. I can't believe I haven't met him before now.'
'What I want to know is does he have a friend for me?' said Lana with a grin.
'Hey,' said Chloe. 'That can easily be arranged.'
Lana just smiled. 'I'm teasing. I don't have time for dating.'
'Or at least not until the right guy asks her out,' said Kennedy smiling across at Chloe, who immediately caught on.
'Yeah, the right guy. Somebody like, oh, I don't know...a certain Mr. Kent, perhaps?'
Lana looked at them both and shook her head. 'Now, ladies, you know that Clark's father only has eyes for his mother. Besides, he's way too old for me,' she added with a grin.
