With her hands folded in her laps, Jeanie tried to focus on what it was Amanda was saying. However, she couldn't. The only person that managed to occupy Jeanie's mind for an entire week, was Stacey.
Did Jeanie make the right decision? She hated to even think that Stacey would put her in the position of having to pick between her and Bernard. What was worse was the fact that she had practically chosen to walk away from the only person who stood by her throughout her life, for a man who most likely would wake up one morning with the decision that he couldn't stand her anymore.
Perhaps Jeanie's choice of Bernard had been a terrible one. Sure, he was mighty handsome and rich and nice, but she barely knew him... Maybe she did, but she couldn't exactly say she knew so much about him and the little she had heard from the media was anything but flattering.
“Jeanie?”
Turning sharply, she found Amanda staring at her.
“Hey, keep your eyes on the road!” Jeanie ordered, giving Amanda a disapproving frown. Amanda giggled but turned her attention back to the road.
They were on their way home from Bernard's office. Jeanie hadn't exactly been feeling happy in a few days and she didn't know why but every time she was around Bernard, she felt guilty. She had feigned a headache and Amanda had offered to drive her home. Gabrielle, on the other hand, wanted to stay behind to get fitted for the fashion show in a little over a week.
“You seem terribly distant these past few days. Are you okay?” Amanda glanced briefly at her before turning back to the road ahead.
Jeanie wanted to deny being distant but she figured she might as well tell somebody about it. Speaking to her mother would not only prove to be useless, it would be Gabrielle's opportunity to blame Jeanie for being a spinster at thirty. She couldn't talk to Bernard; he constituted a part of her problem. Concluding that Amanda was the best and only option she had, she heaved a breath.
“I just... Well, I made a decision and now I'm having doubt about it.”
“Oh?”
“Yes. It's about Bernard...” Amanda turned briefly to give Jeanie a knowing smile. “And my best friend... Well, in all honesty, we're not friends anymore considering she dumped me... Or I dumped her. The truth is, she put me in a really tight position where she practically forced me to decide! 'It's me or him, Jeanie!'” Jeanie mocked, shaking her head slowly. “You'd think after all these years, she'd stand by me! You know what I think?” Amanda let out a low groan and Jeanie nodded. “I think she's jealous! I mean I'm the one who somehow managed to land Mr hot stuff.” Amanda turned then, her brows raised. “You wouldn't understand, Amanda, I never land Mr hot stuff. Oh, and by Mr hot stuff, I'm referring to Bernard.”
“I would never have guessed.” She answered dryly.
“The point is, now I feel like I made a really bad decision because well, Stace is and has always been my best friend! She's always been there for me when I needed her... Mostly when I don't need her... It's just... Look, I know next to nothing personal about Bernard. What if he's the monster the internet describes him as? What if I'm in the wrong fairytale? Did I ever tell you I'm Belle in my dreams but I'm always wearing Cinderella's dress?! Belle shouldn't wear Cinderella's dress. So what if I'm Cinderella and I'm meant to be with a Prince, not Belle's beast?!” She turned frantic eyes to Amanda whose attention was still on the road. “What if I'm Cinderella and I'm in the wrong fairytale? This is bound to end badly!”
“Ok!” Amanda said, hitting the breaks so fast, if Jeanie didn't have on her seat belt, she would have gone flying out through the windscreen.
“What are you doing?!” She turned frantic eyes to Amanda.
