-Holly's POV-
I just stared at Anthony, moving my mouth in a failed attempt to tell him what the doctor told me. But I just couldn't do it. I shook my head and ran my fingers through my hair, "It's nothing. How about we just help Joey get ready for this party?"
"Are you sure you're able to go to a party, Hol?" He inquired concernedly, "I mean, you don't look like you're in the mood to party."
"I'll push through it," I retorted, "I've done it plenty of times before in my life..."
He frowned before pulling me close to him and kissing me on the forehead, "You know I'm always here for you."
"I know, Anthony," I murmured as I buried my face into his shoulder, "I know."
"Hey, remember Max and Nev?" He inquired, completely irrelevant to what we were just talking about.
"Yeah, why?" I retorted, stepping out of the embrace and looked up at him.
"Well I invited them to the party tonight," He said before leading me into the house.
"Aren't they busy, though? Traveling around the US to help other people who've been catfished?" I questioned.
"Nope, they said they were in town and that they'd love to come."
"Who said they'd love to come?" Joey asked as he leaned the mop on the kitchen counter and pulled off the rubber gloves he had on his hands.
"Max and Nev," Anthony answered.
"Oh cool! That's awesome!" Joey exclaimed.
I covered my face with my hands and moaned.
-Ian's POV-
I was standing in front of the mirror, making sure I looked alright. I was wearing a pair of my nicer jeans, a nice t-shirt, and a nice sweatshirt.
"Dude, you look fine," Anthony told me from my bedroom doorway. I glanced back at him, "The party's going to be over by the time you decide what to wear. Let's just go."
"Is Holly going to be there?" I inquired, blushing slightly.
"Of course she is," He retorted, peeling himself from the threshold and walking over to me, "It's her house. Why wouldn't she be there?"
"I think she's mad at me. What if she totally ignores me?"
He rolled his eyes, "Then she'll ignore you. But don't let it stop you from having a fun time. It's your birthday, Ian."
I sighed, "I know, but I'm not going to have a fun time if Holly isn't."
Anthony crossed his arms over his chest and said, "You know, ever since she and I started dating, I've had a feeling that you aren't happy for me." My eyes widened - what if Holly told him what I told her? "Do you think I'm not good enough for her or something?"
"No...you're great for her...it's just..."
"Just what?" He cut me off.
I gulped - this is your chance to tell him Ian. He knows something is up, so why not just tell him the truth? Okay, you've got this. "It's just...I think you're waiting too long to propose to her." Waiting too long to propose to her? Where the hell did that come from?
"So...the problem is that you think I need to propose to her?"
I scratched behind my neck, "Yeah, I mean...don't be like me and wait six years to realize that you should've proposed to her sooner." I bit my lip. See, Holly was the only one I told Melanie and I broke up because I thought I loved her. I told others that we broke up because she wanted me to propose and I wasn't ready.
He stared at me for the longest time before nodding his head and saying, "Oh...well then..." He sighed and shook his head, "Whatever. Let's go. We're going to be late."
I followed him out and over to Holly and Joey's place, which was overflowing with people. Anthony and I squeezed our way in and saw Holly talking with Max and Nev. They all had red solo cups in their hands, which probably contained alcohol.
"You look great, Holly," Max commented.
"Thanks," She replied with a smile. Man, did I miss seeing her smile...
Holly turned her head and lit up when she saw Anthony and me. "Hey guys!" She greeted, Anthony pulling her in by the side and kissing her on the head.
"Well it's good to see that you guys are still together," Nev stated as I stood there awkwardly.
"Yeah..." Holly and Anthony both retorted in unison.
"Hey, I'm going to go get some more," Holly told Anthony, pointing to her cup. He nodded his head in understanding before she walked away. This is my chance to talk to her. I followed her into the kitchen and found her pouring some whiskey into her cup.
I slipped my hands into my pockets and walked over to her, "Hey, Holly."
She glanced over at me and then back at her drink, "Hello."
"We haven't talked in a while..."
"I know," She said, setting the bottle of alcohol down and picking up her cup. Holly started to walk past me when I stuck my arm out. She looked up at me.
"We need to talk, Hol. Is there somewhere private we can go?"
She heaved a sigh, gulped her drink down, and directed me outside to the patio, sliding the glass door behind her closed. She turned towards me and crossed her arms over her chest, "What do we need to talk about, Ian?"
I exhaled softly before answering, "I love you, Holly."
"You can't love me, Ian," She snapped at me. "That's not how it works. It's not how it ever worked and it's not how it's going to work. You've always thought of me as just a friend."
"Because I was stupid."
"Because you were in love with someone else," She corrected me, taking a step closer to me. The moonlight made her straight blue hair shine and her eyes glisten with tears. She placed her hands on my chest and sighed, "You were in love with Melanie. And you still are..."
"No I'm not. I broke up with her," I remarked softly, "For you."
She frowned, "Ian...you hurt me...so fucking bad..."
"I know I did, and I'm so..."
Just then, Holly went on her tiptoes and pressed her lips against mine. I was shocked at first, but then I just went along with it. She pulled me closer to her and I wrapped my arms around her lower back.
"Ian?"
I pulled out of the kiss and saw Melanie standing in the doorway. I stepped away from Holly and stared Melanie in disbelief. What was she doing here? And to make things worse, Anthony walked up behind her.
"What's going on?" He asked.
"Your fucking girlfriend kissed my boyfriend!" Melanie shouted, pointing at us. Holly scratched behind her head and I hung my head in shame.
"What?" Anthony croaked.
