There was a girl who dreamed she could fly
She thought if only she could lift off the ground
If only she could spread her wings,
Then maybe things wouldn't be as bad as they seemed
So she'd close her eyes and she'd stretch her mind
And behind her large glorious wings would unfold
They would unfold and flap and carry her into the sky
The sky where she could be free
She would grab every book on the shelves each day
Imagining herself in a world other than her own
Escaping to a new reality where she could
She could do anything! The world was full of possibilities for her to explore
And then the book ended, and once again she was stuck
Lying on the couch, the return to real life only a few hours away
But she still had her dreams
In them she could continue the adventure where the author left off
It was maybe better, because now
She had a story to call her own, she could replay the scenes again and again in her mind
A mental catalog of all the best things that never actually happened
As she grew her mind continued to dream of flight
If only people could see her up there, then they'd understand!
What? What would they understand? She didn't know
In the worst of days she would imagine herself slipping out the window
Flying off in the night to go on an adventure
And then one day dreaming was not enough
She was ready to make her own adventure
So She began to design wings in her head,
If she wasn't going to grow them, she would make them instead
It seemed an impossible feat, but she didn't give up yet
And she kept imagining and refining the design in her mind
Researching and reading
Finding things she wouldn't have thought possible, but also finding disappointment
She didn't have the skills or the money or the time or the tools
How was one young girl going to do what no one else could?
So she started out small building flapping contraptions,
They didn't work, but she didn't stop
And she wouldn't stop until she succeeded...
One day she solved the puzzle, she left the ground
And she flew off into the sunset happy at last
I watched her go with a pit of despair
Because I couldn't follow her up there
Instead I had to stay on the ground
And face my own reality
I might have moved on, but I never stopped dreaming
And there are still some days where I'll close my eyes and I'll see that girl fly...
Off to save the world
Oh, how I want to be her again someday
