For the first time in a while, Cody actually felt relaxed. She dozed softly on her bed, barely hearing the music she had put on in the background, her chemistry book laying open against her stomach. Her breathing was deep, calm. All that went away with a knock on her door. She sat up, taking in her surroundings with relief. She stood and moved to her door groggily, ready to snap at whoever had disturbed the first peaceful sleep she had had in two weeks. She opened her door and Allison pushed her way in, speaking before Cody could.
"Okay, we need to talk," said Allison, pacing back and forth across the pink rug on the floor.
"No, no, please come in," said Cody sarcastically. Allison ignored her.
"I really need you to tell me the truth, okay? Cuz Scott lied to me, dad and Kate are lying to me. You're my sister. Please don't lie to me." She was rambling. "Besides, you have to do what I say because I'm older than you."
Cody cracked a smile. "You're older than me by three months. Plus, I'm not even your real sister so don't pull that card on me."
Allison sighed and ran her hand through her messy curls. She turned back to her sister. "Cody, please. You have to tell me what the hell happened to you that night in the school. You scared the crap out of me, I didn't know what to do!"
"Ally, calm down," said Cody.
Allison turned to her, giving her a demanding, impatient look. "Don't tell me to calm down. Tell me what happened?"
Cody took a deep breath and fixed a hard gaze on Allison, willing herself to look calm. Allison was good at detecting lies. "I've been getting these headaches," she said. That wasn't totally a lie. "They're really weird. Sometimes my nose bleeds too. And they effect my sleep."
You're not lying, Cody told herself. You're just not telling the whole truth.
"So that's why you've looked so sick lately?"
Cody nodded. "Just out of curiosity, how bad do I look?"
Allison gave her a sympathetic look. "You look like you haven't been sleeping."
Cody raised her eyebrows, knowing her sister was trying to be nice. "From 'needs a nap' to 'looks like death,' how bad are we talking here?"
Allison grimaced. "'Should be in a mental hospital.'"
Cody nodded, an irritated of course escaping her lips.
"If these headaches are so bad why don't you go to the doctor?" Allison asked. "Have you even told mom and dad?"
