These voices won't leave me alone ~ Gasoline ~ HalseyCody paced back and forth in front of her dad's office door, building the courage to knock. She brought her hand up, paused, and then brought it back down again like she had at least three times before. She went over what she was going to say to him for the hundredth time in her head. She took a deep breath and knocked.
"Come in," he called.
She opened the door slowly and went in, stopping just in front of her dad's desk.
He glanced up quickly, then looked back at the files scattered across his desk. "Hey, kiddo. What's up?"
"Um, I wanted to ask you something," said Cody tentatively.
"What?"
"I-" she paused for moment, then decided to just get it over with. "I want to know about my birth parents."
Her dad stopped his writing completely and set down his pen, looking up at her. "You've never asked about them before now. What brought this on?"
Oh you know, Derek Hale thinks I'm some type of powerful supernatural creature and I just wanted to know if you knew if my mother was one. Also is it a coincidence that you hunt supernatural things and I just so happen to be one? Cody wanted to ask.
"I don't know," said Cody, staring down at her finger as she picked at her nails. "It's just something I've been wondering about lately. I mean, you had Allison and then adopted me three months later. That seems kind of weird."
"I've told you about your adoption before, remember?" he said. "We were already in the process of adopting when your mom got pregnant with Allison. We heard there was another baby out there for us and we decided to follow through with it."
"Oh, yeah," said Cody softly. "But I don't know anything about them. I don't even know my mom's name."
Chris thought for a moment. "I think her name was Claudia," he said after a moment.
"Claudia what?"
"Oh, gosh, I can't remember," he said. "It's been so many years. It was a closed adoption and we didn't even get to meet her."
"Oh," said Cody, the disappointment evident in her voice.
"I'm sorry, kid," said her dad. "I know it's natural for a kid to want to know about their birth parents. I wish I had more to give you."
