Pairing: Brett and Mason
Brett hated Liam.
He hated the way he talked - too loud, and the way he played - to controlled, and looked - too much like a gopher.
But most of all, he hated the way he kept touching Mason.
It's not like he was subtle about it either, and every time Brett would growl or even attack him, he just acted like it was some big joke and walked away - but not without squeezing onto his Mason's shoulder, laughing under his breath as Brett's hackles rose.
"Brett, let it go." Mason said, "He's my best friend and, I'm sorry, but he's not going anywhere." As though Brett had ever planned on seperating them. As though he thought he could.
"That doesn't mean he has to touch you all the time." He said, ignoring the protests falling from Mason's lips, "You're mine. He doesn't get to just, just touch you. No matter how close you are."
"I think there are some people out there who would disagree with that statement. Oh look, here comes one now." This said while pointing at himself.
He didn't get it, couldn't tell the difference between contact and scent marking.
It was fine before, when Liam had always been around, always right there in his mates space, because before that's all it had been, two friends who were admittedly a little too close.
Even when Liam had first been bitten it had been okay, mostly. The only real problem had come when he had accidentally scent marked Mason, nose and hands trailing along his arm.
Brett knows that this is his fault. If he hadn't reacted that way, then Liam wouldn't even know what scent marking is, let alone what it means.
And now, at every opportunity Liam does it, rubbing his scent all over Mason until it's impossible to tell that anyone but Liam's ever touched him, and Brett's starting to get the feeling that he doesn't know what it means, can't possibly.
"You don't understand."
"Oh what, because I'm not a werewolf?" He huffed, "I'm not actually clueless you know. And werewolf or not, I'm not yours. You can't own a person."
Brett tried not to let that get to him, he knew what Mason said was true, that he and Brett would never be more than they we're now, but that didn't make it hurt any less.
He wished Mason would just understand. That he would realize that Brett didn't want to own him, he wanted Mason to belong with him, just as much as Brett belonged with Mason.
"You know that's not -
He's doing it on purpose. To provoke me."
Mason just kept looking more and more furious, as though the mere thought of him being Liam's shouldn't have this effect on Brett, shouldn't have any effect on him at all.
"That's not true! Liam, tell him." Mason said, eyebrow quirked at Brett as if to say, Just you wait, he'll tell you too.
Except Liam doesn't tell him, because he knows, just like brett knows, that he wasn't just touching him.
"Well..." And that got his attention.
"Well what? Liam?"
"It wasn't on purpose, not at first. And I swear I never thought you two would fight so hard about it. I mean, I'm just making him smell like pack, right?"
