Lightningpaw sat next to her siblings after a long day of training. "You are so lucky, Rainpaw." Tealpaw meowed, bringing her wet paw over her ear. "You dont have to be constantly out in the sun, which, by the way, is hot."
Rainpaw just sighed, barely reaching her chin. "But i have to deal with Swallowfern and her aches and pains."
Thunderpaw shivered at the thought, "I'm fine where i am." He proceeded to puff out his chest in pride.
"No wonder, you are plain brawn." Lightningpaw said, while she was only a little smaller than the ginger tom.
Just then, yowls could be heard, along with a horrid stench and barking.
"Dogs!" Meadowstar called into the camp.
Rainpaw and Lightningpaw were already on their paws, racing towards the nursery. "Go inside, Lightningpaw. Tell the kits to hide. You are better than me with them." Rainpaw meowed.
Lightningpaw shook her head, eyes wide, "No way! You go!" But Rainpaw didn't take no for an answer, and used as much force on the bigger apprentice as possible, causing her to step in.
She gently padded to the back of the den, and realized Dawnpelt was nowhere to be seen.
"Lunakit, Sunnykit, i have a game." She whispered
"What kind of game?" Sunnykit asked.
"You hide in here for as long as possible, while i look for you."
Lunakit nodded, "Lets play! The game starts now!"
She and Sunnykit hid while Lightningpaw padded away. She went next to Rainpaw, who was guarding the entrance.
A few minutes later, some dogs got passed the barrier. They saw the apprentices and bounded towards them. Rainpaw was soon shaking in fright. He tried to get away, but a dog grabbed him.
The dog was tall and boney. He shook the small tom and released Rainpaw, sending the pale grey cat tumbling into the wall. He didn't get up.
"Rainpaw!" Lightningpaw yowled in grief. She turned to the large male dog and scratched his nose, just as Thunderpaw bit the dog's tail. Tealpaw proceeded to scratch his belly. The dog ran away.
They glanced around, realizing all of the dogs were gone. Then, they padded to where Rainpaw lay, "Oh, Rainpaw." Tealpaw mewed sadly, "We are going to miss you."
Thunderpaw nodded, just as Rainpaw looked distantly at each of them, "See you in StarClan, but not too soon, I hope."
They then surrounded Rainpaw, trapping him in a nest of apprentices, like they did when they were kits, and all of them fell asleep, one never to wake again.
