"I love you Elizabeth Cooper." Betty opened her eyes and looked around. "Jug?" But no one was there. Betty put her blonde hair into a bun, changed into her cheer uniform and headed downstairs. She figured she must have imagined Jughead in her room.
"Morning Betty." Her mom said, sipping her usual vanilla chai latte.
"Can I ask you something?" Betty questioned.
Alice looked wary. "If it has anything to do with your father, no. I kicked him out for a good reason. I still can't believe he wanted Polly to-"
"No mom. It's not about dad." Betty interjected quickly. The last thing she needed was her mom to go on a rant this early in the morning.
Relief washed over Alice's face. "What's going on?"
"How did I get to my room last night? The last thing I remember was falling asleep on Jughead's shoulder at Pop's after he picked me and Veronica at the school."
"Jughead carried you up to your room. But why weren't you with Archie?"
Alice saw tears well up in her daughter's eyes.
"H-He cheated on me mom. With Cheryl."
Alice ran over and wrapped her shaking daughter in a hug.
"I'm so sorry babygirl. I am so sorry. If he can't see what a great girl you are, that's his loss."
Betty looked up at her mom, and attempted a smile.
"I'll be alright mom. I've got Veronica, Jughead, and Kevin to help me through this."
Alice smiled and looked at the clock on the microwave. "Betty. You're going to be late. You need to hurry."
Betty nodded her head. "You're right. Veronica's here anyway. I'll talk to you more when I get home. I love you."
"I love you too sweetie. Have a good day."
Betty ran out the door and jumped in her best friends baby blue Camaro.
"You ready Betty? You look amazing by the way."
"Thanks V. And I have something to tell you."
"What's that?" Veronica asked innocently. The truth was, she already knew. Jughead had told her last night when she dropped him off at the trailer park.
"Jughead said he loved me."
"And how do you feel about that?"
I don't know. I'm still hurt because of Archie, and Jughead's a really great friend. I'm not sure I want to jeopardize things. I don't know V."
Veronica took her best friends hand. "You'll figure it out. You always do. Now let's head to school before Weatherbee gives us detention."
Betty nodded, reaching for the volume button on the stereo. "That's the last thing we need. Is it okay if I steal the aux cord?"
Veronica handed it over, and pretty soon Say My Name by Destiny's Child was blasting through the speakers.
"Say my name, say my name if no one is around you say baby I love you if you ain't running game." Both girls sang as they peeled out of the Cooper's driveway.
Thanks in large part to Veronica's lead foot and the minimal traffic, they made it to school in under ten minutes.
Betty and Veronica ran into Riverdale High, to find all the students milling around.
"What's going on? Betty questioned.
"I don't know. Let's ask Kev." Veronica nodded over to where Kevin was standing with Josie, who was listening intently as Kevin was talking animatedly about something.
"Hey Kev, hey Josie."
"Ronnie! Thank goodness you're here. Weatherbee called an emergency assembly, and the Pussycats have to perform. Have you seen Val and Mel? Josie asked, her usually calm face showing signs of worry.
"Nope. Just got here. What's the assembly about, anyway?"
"I don't know... Cheryl has some "big announcement." Kevin said, using air quotes.
Before any of the girls could respond, the PA system crackled to life, and Cheryl Blossom started speaking.
"Good morning Riverdale High! Please file into the auditorium. The assembly will begin shortly."
"I guess we better head inside. Wouldn't want to keep her royal bitchness waiting." Josie muttered, earning a laugh from her three friends.
They all filed into the auditorium, with Josie, Val, Mel, Veronica and Betty making their way to the makeshift stage.
Before any of the girls could make it up the stage steps however, they were stopped by the ice queen herself.
"Last minute change of plans. No cheer routine, and no Josie and the Pussycats. Please return to your seats."
The five girls didn't say anything, just walked back up to the bleachers, earning questioning looks from Kevin and Jughead, who had just arrived.
"What's going on." Jughead asked.
"No one has a clue." Josie answered.
"Well, we're going to find out soon, because Cheryl's at the podium." Kevin said.
"Attention Riverdale High! I have an important announcement." The redhead's eyes scanned the room before landing on Betty's.
"As some of you may know, Betty Cooper and Archie Andrews were the class favorites for Homecoming Queen and King." At this point Cheryl paused.
Josie looked at her friends. "She's got to be joking."
Veronica tensed up next to Betty. "She called an assembly for this?!"
"However", Cheryl continued. "Due to the fact that Archie cheated on Betty with me, I move to have their names taken off the ballot, and replaced with mine and Archie's. That is all."
It was so quiet in that auditorium you could have heard a pin drop. Even Weatherbee looked uncomfortable walking up to the auditorium.
"Students, you're dismissed. Please return to your homeroom. Archie, Cheryl, meet me in the principal's office immediately."
