three
The bell rang, signaling the end of the school day. After the incident, school ran considerably smoothly, without Buffy or Ryder in sight for the rest of the day.
I slammed my textbook shut and shoved it into my bag. It was safe to say I hadn't been paying attention at all throughout this lesson. My mind steered away to the lunchtime incident. Fear racked my body at the harsh memory yet I shook it off and stood up from my seat. I slung my bag over my shoulder and bolted out of the class.
"Woah. Speedy Gonzalez, where are you going?" A very familiar voice shouted after me.
My head whipped around only to find Alex standing behind me. My body sagged in relief and I ran straight for my brother, crashing into his chest. He let out and 'oomph' yet wrapped his arms around my back and cuddled me into his chest.
"Where were you? I sent you an SOS," I mumbled into his chest.
His arms tightened around me before a sigh escaped him.
"How do you think Ryder got there?"
The question caused me to step away from Alex, his arms dropping to his side. I sent him a questioning look and tilted my head to the side in wonder.
"That was you? You sent him?" I asked, my eyebrows furrowed together in confusion.
"Yes," he sheepishly replied, rubbing the back of his neck.
"H-how?" I spluttered in total disbelief.
I knew Alex was way more popular than I was but in no way did I know he associated with Ryder.
"I was, um, I was with a... friend," he stuttered nervously, his cheeks tinged red.
"Okay, and this friend happened to be a mutual friend of Ryder?"
Alex nodded.
"And you were so busy with this friend, that you had to send Ryder to your sister's emergency?" I pressed, crossing my arms over my chest.
"I knew he could have done more than I could of! I'm weak as fuck in case you haven't realized, Cass!" He cried out, waving his noodle like arms in the air.
I stifled a laugh at his frantic actions before laughter bubbled out of me.
"True," I laughed before stepping forward and wrapping my arms around his slim waist. "Thank you."
Alex didn't reply, tucking me safety in his chest and pressing a kiss to my forehead.
"Did you get another letter!?" He asked eagerly, bouncing on the balls of his feet after he pulled away from me.
I nodded my head enthusiastically and reached into my pocket to pull out the folded piece of paper. I thrusted the paper towards him, which he took more than eagerly. I watched him unfold the paper as his eyes ran over the words several times before his eyes lit up.
"Awwww, Cass! That's so fucking cute," he squeals, as he handed me the letter back.
"I know!" I beamed happily.
"Do you think you will ever figure out who anonymous is?" Alex questioned with furrowed eyebrows.
The question caught me off guard, the smile dropping off my face immediately. I've thought about trying to figure out who the anonymous writer was, but how? There are so many people it could have been in this school yet not one of them seemed to stand out to me.
