You woke up back at camp the next day. It was such a long walk that David decided it would be a chill day and was only doing a few activities later in the afternoon to let everyone get some sleep. You turn to your alarm clock. It was twelve thirty six, earlier than you thought you would wake up, considering you arrived back at camp sometime around three a.m. You were used to getting little to no sleep but something was troubling you. You had strange dream about David. It wasn't too weird but clearly you had some issues. 'God, this is pathetic' you thought to yourself. You'd only known him for two days and your brain had exploded this tiny crush into what felt like one of those cliché movie romances where the couple had known each other seince child hood. You wanted to hit yourself for it. You had also remembered that you hadn't written about the little 'incident' when you had seen David without-... you stopped your mind from recalling that scene and pulled the journal out writing about the two ...interesting thoughts, and some other things about David without even thinking. You locked up the book as soon as you finished and tucked it away in a drawer.
You looked over at your ukulele. It had been a little bit since you'd played it. You were about to walk over to the little instrument, when someone threw something through your open window. As the container landed it made a loud crashing noise and let out a gas substance.
You coughed harshly as the putrid sent assaulted your nose, running out of the cabin, sliding on the dirt and faking on your knees. You obviously attracted David's attention. "(Y/N)! Are you alright?!" He asked, running to you. "I'm fine" you coughed. "What happened?!" He asked, alarmed. "Someone axe bombed my cabin." You said, still coughing. He helped you up. "Oh dear. You're knees got really banged up. Let's go patch you up while your cabin airs out." He said, trying to help you to the counselors office. As he searched for the 'second-aid kit' you examined your knees. "Brace yourself. This is going to hurt." He said. You instinctively tried to jerk your hand back when David suddenly poured Neosporin on the wounds. You hissed through your teeth as the liquid stung violently. "Sorry, sorry! I'm so sorry!" He apologized. He reached for a soft towel and dabbed it on your wounds, wiping away any harmful germs or dirt. When he had finally finished you let out a breath you didn't realize you had been holding in.
"Again, I'm sorry." He said, wrapping bandages around your knees and hands. "It's fine. You were just helping. It's your job." You told him, reassuringly. He stood stretching his arms out. "I bet your cabins aired out a bit." He said, a bit of guilt still in his voice. "I hope so." You said, letting out a hesitant chuckle.
Max's POV
I watched as the two exited the office. I had gotten what I'd needed. While they had been away from the cabin I snuck in and stolen the two journals and matching keys I had seen (Y/N) with. "So what's the plan?" Nikki asked excitedly. "Well, I intend to blackmail her, of course." I said, as if it was obvious. "But what if there's nothing you can use against her?" Neil piped up. "Neil, buddy.... you can blackmail anyone for anything." I answered smugly. I unlocked the first one. It was covered in music notes. "Ugh, boring." I sighed, locking it up. However, the next one was not disappointing. "Ohhhh! Dirty secrets!" Nikki squealed. I scoffed at most of the stupid writing and dreams in the book. I was about to give up when I turned to the most recent pages. My eyes widened as the words on the page burned into my mind. First of all, fucking ew, and second, pure blackmail material. I smirked at the two. "I think we have what we needed." I laughed. Nikki laughed somewhat maniacally while Neil made a gagging noise. "Really? David? Does (Y/N) have something wrong with her?" Neil asked. "Probably but this is perfect! We can keep her on the hook forever!" I exclaimed. "Now let's figure out how to approach her."

(Y/N)'s POV
Later that evening, David wanted to have a small camp fire, so the campers could share true stories, fantasies, and scary stories. "And that's why you shouldn't have kids." The quatermaster said, nonchalantly. The children's faces looked like they were scarred for life, which they probably were. "Please never let the quartermaster share a story again." Neil pleaded. The quartermaster sighed lowly, and mumbled something, before leaving the camp fire. It was nice being able to watch these kids socialize, like some big family, they seemed to really know each other. Sure, most of them hated eachother's guts and hit each other, but that's what family does. You realize something was missing, but you just couldn't tell. "(Y/N), you play ukulele right?" Nerris asked. "Oh, yeah I do! Why do you ask?" You replied. "Well, it's no rebec or lute, but I thought you could play a song! Not a song like davids." She said, looking in David's direction towards the end of her sentence. You nodded, giving her a warm smile. "Let me go get it from my cabin." You got up walking to your cabin.
You walk in and find there's no odor, but you sense a presence in the room. The swivel chair in front of your desk suddenly turned. "I've been expecting yo-" A male voice started. As the chair turned to face you, looking like he was ready to say something like some mafia leader would say, until the chair went past it's destination and turned back away from you. "Damn it! Fuck having short legs!" He huffed turning back to face you. He cleared his throat. "I've been expecting you." He said. "Max, what the fuck are you doing?" I asked, already irritated. "Well, I was doing some investigating about you, and almost gave up on trying to find some sort of baggage, until I saw you writing in this." He held up your journal with a smug grin. "You little-" he cut you off. "Boy, you're quite the interesting person (Y/N)! Especially your newest entry! That one's top notch!" He said, m giving you an ok sign with his hand. "What newest-?" You thought on what you had put. "Oh fuck, no." A layer of blush covered your entire face. "Who did you tell?" You asked quickly. "Don't worry, only me, Neil, and Nikki know, but I'm not afraid to tell everyone in earshot if you don't listen to us." He said, mockingly flipping through the pages. "No fucking way!" You spat. "Oh, ok. I guess I'll just tell David you think, in your own words..." he looked at the paper. "He has 'a very foine ass'" he said, changing the way you'd wrote 'fine'. "You little shit... fine I'll do whatever, just give me my journal." You demanded. He ripped out the few pages about David. "A pleasure doing businesses with you." He laughed, exiting the cabin. You sighed, grabbing what you had come to get into the first place. The whole way back to the fire, you let out swears under your breath. "There you are (Y/N)!" Nerris waved. You quickly sat next to her. "What took you so long?" She asked, in her nasally voice. "Oh... I just... had some trouble finding my ukulele." You said, glaring at Max who had sat next to Neil. "Oh, ok! So, what can you play?" She asked, tilting her head. "Well, what do you want to hear?" You asked. "Play something a bard would play!" She squirmed excitedly. "You got it." You readjusted the ukulele and played some silly tune. After the other campers saw you play a song for Nerris, they each wanted you to play a song for them. Harrison wanted some Houdini sounding song, spacekid asked you to play space oddity, and so on.
Max was a little shit to you the whole night, which David picked up on, and pulled you aside. "Ok, what's wrong?" He asked, sitting you down on a log. "Max is just getting on my nerves. I know he's not a horrible kid but it's just hard to deal with him." You said, rubbing your temples. "I'm sure it's not that bad. Maybe he's just... warming up to you?" He suggested. You sighed. "He's just so frustrating!" You huffed. "What camp is he even in?" You asked. David sighed. "As a counselor, you deserve to know this...." David was very silent, for a good minute of just breathing, which alarmed you. "His parents didn't care enough to put him in a camp..." Davids voice was soft, with a hint of sadness. It was your turn to be silent. "How long have you known?" You asked. "It never really came up, until we invited the parents to see what their kids had done at camp. Max's parents never showed up and I lost my temper with his negative attitude. Gwen looked at his file... I don't know how we didn't hear about it before..." he voice was a bit shaky. You rubbed circles around his back. "He's not that bad all the time. He can be really nice when he wants to be. I really hate confrontation, but I kinda want to have a stern talk with his parents for being so bad at, well, parenting." He said, laughing a bit at the end of his sentence. "They sound awful..." all of your frustration had dissolved completely. "It's not right. If they weren't prepared to bring a kid into this world they shouldn't have. Don't get me wrong, he's a good kid, but his parents don't seem like they were prepared." You sighed. David seemed to agree with you. "I'm glad you understand." He said, standing. He quickly jumped back to his usually happy self. "Let's get back to the campers before they start a forest fire." He joked. "Yeah, yeah, let's go." You laughed, following. As you approached the camp you saw Harrison trying to do a fire trick on space kid. "HARRISON, NO!" You said running to him. David ran to space kid and picked him up. "Ok! Let's not do fire magic!" He half-heartedly laughed.
