Gabriella's POV

Cade stirred before finally sitting up. I watched him rub the sleep from his eyes and stretch from being stuck on the ground. "Morning." I said when he finally stood. "You been up all night?" He asked glancing down at Reeve and Collin. "Yeah." I said turning back to stare at the mountains that loomed over us. "You excited?" Cade asked as he packed his bag. "More like gut wrenching fear." I half joked. "Cade," I said getting serious. "What if nothing is there?" "Maybe we should start it then." He said standing straight. I thought about it. I couldnt exactly go home after all that had happened. I wouldnt exactly be welcomed back with open arms. Maybe with the firing squad. "Agreed." I said. Shock crossed his face. "I was only half serious." He said. "My dad trained me when I was little. I think we could do it." I said hoping I sounded more confident than I felt. He nodded. Collin stirred and opened his eyes. "Morning." Cade said as he shot up. Cade sat there calmly holding his knife. "How'd you find me?" He asked his voice cracking. I glared at him. "Half dead ready to be picked by vultures." I said keeping my voice even. He looked down. "Im sorry." He said. "For what." Cade said standing. "For stealing our supplies, and leaving us to die?" He began to circle Collin menacingly. "Or that we caught you." Collin stayed quiet this time. "Doesnt matter. Were reaching the mountains today. "You," He pointed at Collin. "Will stay at the front of the line so I can see you at all times." Collin nodded.

Reeve finally woke up and we headed out. "Maybe its just me," Reeve said after a while. "But I feel like were being followed." We all stopped and looked around. We couldnt see anything in the distance, but now that Reeve had mentioned it I did feel like I was being watched. Not in the creepy stalker way though. I felt more protected. "Wierd." Reeve said. "No I feel it too." I said frowning. Then we saw it. The big black wolf that I had encountered numerous nights before. It stepped out and stood in front of us. It stared intently at me.

Hello.

"What?" I turned back to the boys. They all looked confused. "Didnt one of you just say hello?" I asked and they shook their heads. "Im losing my mind." I said to them.

No your not.

"Ok seriously what the hell." I whipped my head around. "Im like.. Hearing voices." I said to them. They all looked at me like I was crazy. Right then I believed it too.

Im right here you simpleton.

I turned back to the wolf who cocked his head at me. "You?" I asked unbelievingly. It snorted as if to say yes. "This is not possible." I shook my head. "What isnt?" Cade asked putting his hand to my head. I swatted him away. "I actually think Im communicating with him." I said gesturing to the wolf. "Can you understand me?" I asked it.

I can.

"How is this possible." I asked.

You tell me young one. I havent seen one of your kind for many years.

"Probably because theyve been locked behind walls for a century." Cade scoffed.

The wolf cocked its head at me. "Its true. Weve been living in the dark for years now about the outside world. They taught us its a dangerous place.

And they were right to teach you this.

"I dont get this." Reeve said. "How can you communicate with this thing."
