Six cans of beer, a reserved bottle of wine, a can of almonds, and an iPod loaded with all kinds of songs perhaps but mostly indie. These are Alyssa's company for this fine summer night. The earphones are tucked in her ears but the music was paused, she wanted to hear the sound of the city mixed with sound of the sea just in front of her.
The flickering lights reflected on the water made the night more pleasing. Seating on a bench facing the bay of the city that's her home for years now, she's savoring this typical night. It is past nine, four cans of beer had been emptied but still she's all alone. It is not that she's feeling all lonely, she doesn't. In fact, she's used to this night plan.
She was closing her eyes and feeling the cold night breeze when she felt someone sat beside her and smelled the smoke of a cigarette. This annoyed her.
As she turned her head and checked the smoking person beside her, she was even more turned off, for she thought it as just a normal smoking guy with no proper etiquette even in public. What she saw was a tall woman, even taller that she is.
The woman was wearing short denim shorts and a black tank top that was covered by black leather jacket. And as she tucked her hair behind her ear, Alyssa saw couple of small piercings, two on the upper part of her ear maybe, two on the bottom, and one in the middle part maybe?
Looks like a taller chinita version of you. Aly suddenly thought, zoning out a bit while staring at the "ill-mannered" stranger near her. Not knowing that the stranger she's looking at was already staring back at her, with a smug look on her face.
"Am I that attractive that you're literally stunned?" The woman smirked and blew smoke on Aly's face.
Aly's mind went back to Earth as she tried not to inhale the smoke. This made her more annoyed and a bit embarrassed. She was not stunned by the woman's beauty though the woman's pretty. The truth is, the woman reminded her so much of an important person. But she kept her composure and looked into the woman's eyes.
"Hmm. You're pretty but that disgusting stick you're holding right now turns people off." Aly calmly said. "Can you please kindly put and throw that off in the garbage bin? You're in public. And oh, see the signage?" She pointed at the white board on the post with a black print that says, SMOKING IN THIS AREA IS PROHIBITED. "I'm pretty sure you can read right?" Aly politely smiled which made the woman roll her eyes.
"Okay Ma'am. Heard ya," the woman said as she shoved the cigarette's tip on the bench and throw it in the bin near her. "But hey, let me have some of your beer?"
Aly tugged her earphones off her ears and nodded. Oh well, her supposed to be companion for the night isn't gonna make it, she thought. So, might as well share the beer to some stranger, right?
She was taking a sip from her beer can when she heard the woman smirk. "Six cans of beer? Nuts? And ahhh... oh, an unopened bottle of wine. And wow, the sweetest part is, you're alone." The woman laughed with amusement and sarcasm. "What are you even doing here in the middle of the night? You look so damn miserable."
Aly just smiled that kind of smile that miserable people give, a faint, guilty smile, guilty about being a miserable one. "Yea, just savoring the cold seaside breeze in this city."
"Seriously, bringing liquor that's obviously too plenty for yourself?" the woman laughed again. "You look like some hopeless romantic woman whose boyfriend just stood her up."
"You're quite chatty, you know?" Aly said, with her faint smile. "How 'bout you? Where are your shoes, kid? Are you lost in this city?" It was her turn to smirk at the woman. She just realized that the woman was bare-foot. Quite curious she was, but she didn't mind it. "Sorry, but you kinda look miserable too with your bare feet, the 'wandering off alone in this city in the middle of the night', and smoking cigarette in an inappropriate place."
