"Abigail?" Jack wondered aloud. Tooth nodded. "There's no information on her in our archives, except for her first name and her location, and it doesn't even go into detail. All we know is that she lives in a town called Macon. It's somewhere in Georgia, USA, I think." Jack was disappointed to hear about the lack of information on the child, but it also made him curious. "Hey," he said. "How could Pitch know about this girl and where she is if there's no information on her? If we don't know where she is, how could he?" North, Sandy, Tooth, and Bunny were all silent for a moment. Above Sandy's head, three small dots appeared above his head, indicating silence, and then they morphed into a question mark, and he shrugged.
Bunny stood and sat next to Jack (they were in North's sled). "I know what you mean, mate," he sighed. "It is strange that Pitch would know these things," North commented. "But we have to remember that he's the Boogeyman. He hides under everyone's beds every night and gives them nightmares. I wouldn't be surprised if he had the location and name of every child memorized. After all, he's been doing this a long time." He laughed. "Not as long as me, but..." Jack didn't smile, and North scowled. "Jack," Tooth said, touching his shoulder gently. "We're all worried about this." Jack sighed. "I know," he said. There has to be another explanation, he thought. Pitch had access to the teeth...
"Tooth, why is the Palace so vulnerable? Pitch has attacked it twice now, but I haven't seen you make any attempts to strengthen its security."
Everyone froze. Jack had a point, and a very good one at that. The sad reality hit Tooth like a tornado. It was her fault. Abby was in trouble, and it was all because of her. Slowly, she folded her wings and knelt on the wood flooring of the sled, a downcast expression consuming her features. Sandy tried offering some comfort, but none came.
They were all silent for a long time, until North wearily announced that they were close. The Guardians snapped back into action, and Tooth forgot all about the drama that had just unfolded, putting her duty to protect the children first. They touched down in an underpopulated area and took off in a dead run towards Oak Haven Avenue. According to Tooth, Pitch had taken the teeth of a girl from that area, but it would take some time discovering which home she lived in.
After a hour or two of playing spy, they found a home that seemed to be the one they were looking for. They had tried to identify signs of Pitch, but found none, although Tooth did freak out a little when she found the tooth of a seven year old girl from the next street over.
"One-eighty Oak Haven Avenue," North muttered. The house was a two-story with white paint that probably started off as crème-colored, but years of erosion on the old house had changed its appearance. It was a cute home, and Jack was interested to see the inside. Out of the blue, recognition spread across his features. "Abby!" he cried, laughing. The other Guardians stared at him in confusion as Jack rushed to get a closer look by hiding behind a nearby shed.
He laughed again, and the Guardians joined him behind the old storage unit. "Abby was a strong believer of me a few weeks ago," Jack explained. "I can't be sure now if she is, but she was then."
"What do you know about her?" Bunny asked. Jack shook his head. "To tell you the truth? Not much. In fact, probably no more than you do." The hope in the Guardians eyes died down, but lit back up when North called, "There she is!" Suddenly, a small girl with long brown hair and large green eyes stepped off of a school bus at the end of the street, and began making her way towards the house.
The Guardians grew excited, and Jack ran out to her, but stopped short when he saw her eyes. They were big and bright, like the moon, but they were so sad. Jack wondered what could've happened to her to make her look like that. He almost felt like crying, himself. "Abby?" he said, and knelt down to her height. He was still a bit taller, but not by much. She froze where she was, and fear overran the sadness in her eyes.
The next thing she said sent the Guardians into haywire.
"Pitch?" she called fearfully.
Will anything ever make sense again? Jack asked himself as they sprinted towards North's sleigh and out of sight.
(Ta dah! Finally did it! I like this one - sort of. Not how it ended. Oh well. That's my fault. Thanks for reading!)
