It was a normal day in my life. I woke up hearing the raspy coughs of my mom in bed. The smell of cigarrettes from my sisters room and the aching pain in my head from work.
I'm a maid at Mr Douglas' house. Mr Douglas is a very...erm..what's the word? Naggy man. OKAY..honestly speaking he's a sh*t of a man.
"Lamaya do this"
"Lamaya do that"
"You good for nothing black negro"
He literally gets on my nerves. But at least, I get a source of income working at his plush house.
As a 17 year old, you might be like...I'm not mature enough to be working...
Well..my mom's sick, so she cant work. My lazy ass sister Lané refuses to get a job so I'm basically the one running my family. No...i do not have a dad if you are wondering. I was born a bastard...i'm not that proud of saying it but i've gotten used to telling everyone that.
Back to reality. My day has started and im ready to start my morning routine. I go downstairs to make a cup of hot tea for my mom.
"Morning mom" I say
"Oh hi Lamie" she responds
She still looks weak. She has started to change since her sickness. Her glossy black hair started to change to a dry brownish- grey. Her lively face formed wrinkles, and she had great bags under her eyes.
After i had given her her tea I walked to Lane's room. Her roomed smelled of weed...typical. Ciggarette ashes all over the floor and burnt out ciggarettes on the ground. She had passed out on her bed with her eyes slightly opened. I picked up a broom stashed somewhere at the corner of the room. I swept up all the weed bits and ciggarettes. When i was done i went to my room.. I had my own bathroom with a shower. I took my bath, brushed, and wore clothes for school
I go to a posh school called St. Dreys Heights five streets away from my hood. You may be wondering, I'm not so rich to pay for such a school but thats the thing...I didn't pay my fees. I have a full term scholarship which enables me to attend this school. Apparently I had a brain which could win me such a scholarship. After 3 buses and two 15 minute walks i reached school.
I walked through the hallways and everywhere became quiet. I swear, I could hear a pin drop. This is regular to me..nothing new. I'm always treated like a freak show at school. One, I am one of the least black kids in this school. Two, everyone knows i come from a poor home and my house conditions. This..makes me..a little unapproachable. Atleast on their terms. Oh well. I care less. I have one friend in this school atleast.
"Maya!" I heard a voice call
I turned to see Reenay. She's my bestfriend AND my only friend in S.D.H.
Reenay is also black. But she has a WHOLE different story. Her parents are extremely rich and she has a lot of friends here. At least its easy for her to make friends.
Reenay caught up with me and put her hand round my shoulders.
"Whats up M" she said
I smiled at her
"Well..the usual"
"Your mom? She feeling better?" She asked
My smiled faded.
"No improvements"
She had a look of concern and care
" I really do wish i can help Maya."
Yeah. You wish...your parents are loaded rich. At least i would bet tops that y'all aint gon even spill up a dime for us. I thought
"Yeah" I said instead.
The rest of school was normal until lunch. I was about to take my seat with Reenay and a couple of her white friends when these kids called me to their table.
Damn. Those kids are bad news.
The worst about that is that they're all blacks. They are like me..in a way, but I'm not like them in a lotta ways.
" Aye Maya. Yo always sitting with all them white kids. Ever tried hanging with people yo race?" a girl asked
I knew her name. Een. Her name's actually Mina but everyone calles her Een. She had a very slender structure, dark skin..a little bit darker than mine and she always had on braids with beads tied in them.
"Uh..no" I responded
"Well..Maya. You could sit with us" she said that with a commanding tone.
I gulped
"Errmm..okay"
I sat by their table. They all smiled at me. They were all black on the table and i felt a little bit fitting in.
"Okay. So i guess you don't know all of us here" Een said
"This is Jay." She said as a light skinned guy smiled. He had dark curly hair and a friendly smile.
" Ola.." A very dark guy waved.
"Hello." He said with a thick African accent.
He was tall and mascular
" Trin.."
A brown haired girl smiled. She looked quite tough, but pretty. Her brown hair was wavy and she had a light dark skin. She was mixed. Obviously.
"Travis.."
A cute guy gave me a peace up. Curly hair. Dark light skin...he looked like Trin. Maybe they are related
"Deezah.."
A dark black haired girl glared at me.
It was cool sitting by them. They asked a lotta questions and most of them were nice. Except Deezah. I dont think she liked me much
Everything suddenly changed when Een told me something
"Now look Maya..We have a very huge secret that we would like to share with you. Since you are one of us." She started.
I gulped.
"We have been treated differently in this school for a very long time. We were sick and tired of it. We..the different coloured of this school..we came together and made ourself stronger. We relied on our only hope to help us stand. We have been relying on something for so long and its been helping us. We feel no pain, sorrow or fear."
" This..our only hope is what our biggest secret is. We want you to join us and enjoy part of our strength pillar" Een said as she looked around the cafeteria mysteriously. She brought out a bag. It was not opened but I was too used to the smell and I knew what was is in an instant.
Een brought out a handfull of the weed out of the bag.
"This is our hope. And we want you to enjoy this hope with us" Een said as she tried to hand me the weed.
I refused.
"Oh..err no. I dont do drugs" I said
Een frowned. "This isnt "drugs", its our strength pillar" she saidYeah, strength pillar my ass.
"No..I really dont..."
But I was cut short buy Eens firm grip on my wrists.
Jay put his arm round me in a friendly manner but i could feel the cold feel of a steel knife.
"You already know our secret Maya! We cant let you go. You have to be forced into the gang" she spat deceitfully.
" Just join us..and you shall keep your head babe" Jay whispered into my ear.I looked over at Reenays table. She was looking at me with a jealous look and looked away when she met my gaze.
It was because Jay's arms were around me. Little did she know I was being treathened.
" Sorry Cita..Your bestfriends not gonna help you. She's having a wonderful time with her white friends" Jay saidFuck you Jay!
"So..Maya. Are you in or out?" Een asked
Jay's knife pressed deeper into my flesh just another move and i could get cut."Yes" I said in defeat.
Jay released me and Een alond with everyone smiled.
"Great. Meet us tommorow at the town park. 2 pm sharp. Got thet?""Yeah"
I got up from the table hurriedly.-
