"There's a 40% chance, Mrs Taylor," Doctor Surgit was saying.
This was definitely not what Kim was expecting when she wanted children.
"Of what? Life or death?" she asked, afraid of the answer. Jack put a comforting arm around his wife.
"Life."
The whole world seemed be closing in and crushing the life out of everyone. Not everyone, just Jordyn.
"I'm sorry that this is what we have to do, but it's the only way," he continued.
"How soon?" Kim whispered. The news was still burning into her mind.
"We need to try to get this as soo-"
"How soon?" Jack demanded. He always tried to keep calm, but no one could be expected to keep calm when you received news that your seven-year-old daughter had to undergo heart surgery.
"Tomorrow is the only opening, otherwise we have to wait months." He spoke quickly, probably trying to make sure he could get it all in without being interrupted. "It may be too late if we wait."
Kim was shocked. What do you say to that? She glanced at Jack.
"We have to," he whispered to her.
"I know." And at that, she began to cry. Jack pulled her into a hug and Doctor Surgit leapt up to grab a box of tissues for Kim.
"I'm sorry," she sputtered, a little embarrassed.
"No need," Doctor Surgit smiled.
