Broken Trust
I'm late!
I slept at 1 a.m. because of him. Chris Russell. My ultimate crush, the reason I couldn't stop overthinking about what might happen today. Now, here I am, racing toward school, cursing the fact that I let my feelings keep me up so late.
Please, let today go smoothly.
I sprinted through the school gates and headed straight to my locker, heart pounding. Oddly, Trisha wasn't there waiting for me like she'd promised. Maybe she already went to class.
I let out a sigh of relief when I realized I still had time before the bell rang. Unlocking my locker, I grabbed the books I needed for class and headed toward English Lit.

Boring as usual.
English Lit dragged on, and I could barely focus, my mind consumed with thoughts of Chris. Finally, the bell rang, signaling lunchtime. I headed toward the cafeteria, my phone buzzing in my pocket. It was Trisha.
"Hey," I answered.
"Get to the cafeteria, now!" she practically screamed.
I winced, pulling the phone away from my ear. "Geez, Tris, calm down! You're going to make me deaf."
She laughed and hung up before I could say anything more. Typical Trisha.
I walked into the cafeteria, scanning for her. She was sitting at our usual table, waving me over excitedly.
"What's up, Banshee?" I said, giving her a mock glare as I sat down.
She ignored my jab, her eyes gleaming with anticipation. "Are you ready?"
"Ready for what?" I asked, but then I followed her gaze.
Oh no...
I froze. Chris Russell. Sitting with his friends at their usual table. Trisha nudged me again, giving me that look that said, This is it. Now or never.
"I—I...yeah," I stammered, though my stomach was doing backflips. Stay calm, Jane. You can do this. What's the worst that could happen?
Before I could protest, Trisha grabbed my hand and practically dragged me over to Chris's table. Oh my god, what am I doing?
"Just do as I say, and you'll be fine. Relax," Trisha whispered as we approached. My palms were already sweaty.
Relax? How am I supposed to relax when I'm about to talk to the guy I've had a crush on for years?
When we finally reached his table, I could barely breathe. Trisha, of course, was cool as ever.
"Hey boys! I'm Trisha. You've probably heard of me, right? But you can call me Tris." She winked at them, and I just stood there, frozen.
What the hell? I thought. She said she was only going to tutor me secretly!
Chris looked up from his conversation and smiled at her, his eyes flickering over to me for a second before returning to Trisha. He's staring at me. Oh my god. Chris Russell is staring at me!
But then, she nudged me, snapping me out of my daze. "Go ahead," her eyes said.
"H-hi, I'm J-Jane?" I stuttered, my voice betraying my nerves. Oh no, I sound ridiculous!
Chris gave me a polite nod before turning his attention back to Trisha, smiling at her like they'd known each other forever.
Uh oh.
A knot formed in my stomach. What if he actually likes Trisha? I glanced over at her, only to see her blushing and smiling back at him.
My ultimate crush is smiling at my best friend.
Ouch.
Chris leaned back in his chair, his gaze still locked on her. "Oh, we've definitely heard of the Bennet family. But how come we've never talked before, Tris?"
He winked at her. And she—she winked back.
Wow.
It wasn't just that Chris was interested in her. It was that Trisha didn't even seem to care about how I felt. She was supposed to be helping me. Now, she was completely absorbed in a conversation with Chris and his friends, laughing and talking like they'd known each other forever. The plan we had made? Forgotten.
I stood there, watching them, feeling invisible. They looked perfect together. It shouldn't hurt this much. It's not like Chris and I were ever a thing, but watching him flirt with her...It stung.
"Okay, I'm just gonna...go. Bye," I mumbled, turning and walking out of the cafeteria, heart heavy. Trisha didn't even notice I was gone.
This wasn't how it was supposed to go. I wasn't supposed to feel this worthless. But I did.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I didn't know how long I had been sitting in my room, staring blankly at the ceiling when my phone rang.
"Hey! Where were you? I've been texting you!" Trisha's voice rang through the phone.
"I was at the library. My phone was on silent," I lied, sitting up in bed.
"Well, you had me worried for nothing," she groaned.
"Tris, don't you have something to say to me?" I asked, cutting straight to the point. I wasn't in the mood for games.
"What? Say what, Jane?" she asked, sounding genuinely confused.
"You were supposed to help me with Chris. But instead, you were flirting with him the whole time. Do you even care how that made me feel?"
"Whoa, what's your problem? I got caught up in the moment, okay? It's not my fault he didn't want to talk to you after you said 'hi,' Jane." Her voice was sharp, almost defensive.
I felt my chest tighten. "Wow. It's bad enough that Chris wasn't interested, but it's worse hearing you say something like that, Trisha. Thanks for pointing out the obvious."
Before she could respond, I hung up. I couldn't believe she was acting like this. Trisha knew—she knew how long I'd had a crush on Chris. But instead of supporting me, she'd turned it into something about her.
It wasn't just about Chris liking her. It was about how she completely disregarded my feelings.
She was my best friend.
Was.
