EDEN AND I SHARED THE SAME look of despair. Seeing Reggie was not the greatest of signs – while we he was one of my favourite guards, I also knew that he was used as a scout. If Reggie was here, that meant I had been right – that Dad had sent guards over.

"Alpha, he hasn't told us who he is, nor what pack he belongs to," Gabriel's guard spoke. I heard the squeal of a chair before smelling Gabriel's scent increase. He was coming closer, and my heart started to race. I don't know if I was excited for Gabriel to be standing right next to me, willingly, or if it was because I was terrified for Reggie.

Reggie's eyes widened when he recognised me, "Kitty?" I knew this wasn't going to end well – now that he'd seen me, he was obligated to let Dad know. He wouldn't want to, but the consequences of not letting him know were dire, "What are you doing here?"

My mind was blank; this was something we hadn't anticipated. If Dad had scouts, they weren't supposed to be caught. So, what happened?

"She came to thank Alpha Redford for saving her last night," Eden spoke up for me. Thank the Mother there was no trembling in her voice – she sounded like she had more authority than me. But that's the way it had always been with us: I seemed like a lower pack ranking, while she had held herself the way an alpha's daughter should have.

I should have been the one to tell Reggie why we'd visited Gabriel but my mind was in overdrive. If Reggie had been sent here – who else had Dad sent?

"Does Alpha Samuel know where Kitty is?" Reggie narrowed his eyes. I knew it more for my sake than his.

"Of course!" Eden scoffed, lying through her teeth. She was a natural at lying; as her closest friend, even I couldn't see any telling signs, "Do you think I'd be with her if I didn't?"

Reggie's eyebrows leaned towards each other, "But–,"

"Leave it, Reggie," and he listened to Eden. Her temper was horrendous, no matter who it was aimed towards. Eden's temper was like wildfire; once it started, it spread quickly and was difficult to put out.

"You know this wolf?" Gabriel asked, breaking his long silence. I was surprised he hadn't said anything beforehand. Usually alphas tended to take the lead, but I was soon learning that everything I thought I knew was wrong. As I looked to Gabriel, I couldn't tell what he was thinking. His face was blank, devoid of any emotion.
