I stared out the car window watching the familiar view of corn fields rush past me.
Except now, the sides of the roads were lined with cars. A man stood in his front yard holding a sign that said $20 FOR PARKING in big bold letters. Cars were lined up in rows in front of his house.
Great I thought. We're almost here.
It was about a half an hour drive from our house to Erin Hills. And the entire time my mom would NOT shut up how excited she was that I was finally coming to a major again to see my dad in action.
She'd been strangely silent for a while, until she cleared her throat and said,
"You know Alex, you are about that age, where you should start to be looking for a long term suitable boyfriend-"
I groaned and slouched down into the seat. Oh no I knew exactly where this was headed.
"Mom please! Really?"
"Alex! There are now lots of young successful golfers around your age. And you know I'm sure your father could introduce to a few."
I stared at my mom. "Mom are you kidding me? I'm perfectly capable of finding my own boyfriend thank you very much. I do not need or want anyones, especially yours or dads, help!"
She gave me a glare.
"And I especially do not want to date a golfer for gods sake. I've already been sucked into this horrible sport enough. I do not need it taking over another aspect of my life."
My mom sighed. "Alex, you know me and your father have been lenient on letting you come to tournaments the past four years with you being in college." I really hope you don't despise golf THAT much. And I'm sorry but I think it's about time you start at least looking for a boyfriend." She said and then focused her eyes back on the road.
Ugh. My last boyfriend had been senior year of high school. We had a good run, but we ended up going to different colleges, so we broke up.
I hadn't exactly dated anyone seriously in college. No one really "dates" in college. Something my parents really don't seem to understand or accept.
Every time I came back for holidays they asked me, "So Alex, have you found a nice boy at Madison? Perhaps one majoring in pre-med or pre-law?"
Yes, they're ridiculous I know.
My little brother, Travis, is about to be a senior in high school. He's making out to be quite the golfer himself, much to the excitement of my dad.
All of a sudden our car jolted to a stop and my mom rolled down the window.
Wow I hadn't even realized we were here. I looked to see a huge grass lot with about a hundred cars in parked in it.
"Hi M'am, do you have clearance to be in here?" Asked a man wearing a bright yellow vest.
"You betcha." Said my mom as she showed him her VIP pass.
"Alright your clear to go in and park. As soon as you park you'll find a path to check in and go through the small security we have here, it shouldn't take too long, and the course is walking distance from there. You ladies have fun!" The man said as he waved us in.
My mom pulled into the lot as we drove past the rows of many expensive Mercedes, Audis, you name it. Lemme tell you, golf sure isn't a sport for the poor.
My mom pulled into a spot and looked at her phone.
"Okay your dad just texted me, we're right on time. He goes back on the air in about 35 mins, before his next break. Let's get a move on!"
I got out of the car, and my brown Tory birch sandals crunched on the gravel. I looked ahead and saw three white tents with a small line forming.
My mom saw me staring at the line. "Alex, we sure are lucky we get preferred parking because of your dad. Normal tournament goers had to get bused here all the way from Oconomowoc! And there security line has got to be hundreds of people long!"
"Wow. Another reason not to come to these things." I joked.
"No time for complaining Alex!" We have to go meet your dad." My mom said as she handed me my pass to wear around my neck.
Great this was gonna be a long day.
