When her heart stopped, mine did too.
Thankfully, for both of us it was only a temporary condition. Kota and Victor both absently reached out to touch Sang. This was the first time more than one person touched her skin-to-skin, and all three of them dropped like rocks. Kota and Victor never actually lost consciousness, just all muscle tension and motor control. They recovered immediately, just complaining of slight dizziness and headaches later. Sang, on the other hand, was void of life signs for nearly thirty den, which I noticed more acutely than any of the others, since I was live-streaming the monitor of her vitals. Owen and the grey-suits were frozen in shock or confusion, but I dived for the fallen trio. I was careful to use covered hands, breaking any contact between the boys and Sang. I didn't dare trying to heal her with my ability, since we didn't know how it might be affected. Luckily, her head landed on Kota's chest, perhaps some unconscious instinct had caused him to pull her that way. I was maneuvering her into place to begin resuscitation, when her lungs filled and heart restarted on their own. I was relieved at that, but any subsequent efforts to wake her were futile.
"I am taking her to MedBay," I said, then added, "Owen, follow with Kota and Victor. Ista Phillips is there and ready." I used my minimal telekinesis talent to lift Sang and rushed through the hallways, my heart pounding. I settled Sang onto an exam table and heard the others come in.
"What happened?!" Owen demanded from behind me.
"I am not...sure...they touched her...at the same time...then all collapsed." Geez, I was breathing way too heavily. Owen was right, I needed to get back to endurance training. It was straining to use telekinesis and not the running though that had me huffing.
"What did the monitor show? Send me the recording," he practically barked. I didn't mind his brusque command. I knew he had been far more affected by the girl than he had been letting on. I sent the file as I worked, physically checking what the monitor read. She was slightly dehydrated so we started an IV line and took some blood samples for analysis.
Ista Phillips and I conducted every test we could, and finally determined she must be in some sort of restorative sleep. We also decided that Kota and Victor were fine, just suffering understandable guilt.
"There was no way any of us could have known this would happen," I told them once again. "Really, you should go get some sleep."
"Yeah, and what about you, Sean?" Victor had turned burning eyes on me, still gripping Sang's hand in his gloved ones; Kota, a mirror on Sang's other side. We had a strict policy of no skin contact, for now.
"Aww, you know Tsee Blackbourne will be back soon enough to drag me away. We all need to eat too, our energy levels down from the testing session and the aftermath." I sighed and wiped my hand over my face.
My two younger squadmates reluctantly released my patient and headed out. I took Victor's place, sitting on the bed we'd moved her to and laced my gloved fingers through hers. Looking down at the beautiful girl, my heart clenched again.
"I'm such a liar," I confessed to her still form. "Owen will be in meetings and dictating reports for hours. You gave us all quite a scare today." I pushed a stray lock of hair behind her ear. "The first time I saw you huddled in that abandoned village, so lost and alone, I knew it was destiny. We're meant to be together, and I will be the happiest man if you one day give me even a part of your heart. Mine's already all yours."
