I was six when my family had an enormous fight with our neighbours who lived a block away. It was all due to this business opportunity that mum and Mr. Hebertson were fighting for. As for daddy, he was always busy and paid less attention to all that drama.
That never seemed to bother Jake, Mr. Hebertson's son and I. He was eight. We would play till the day breaks. I always called him Jaky and he called me Riri. Mummy and Mr. Hebertson still had their thing going on. Mum was a little too competitive. Her efforts did not come to naught. She had the title of the managing director of this company she worked in. We had a big celebration in the house that day with some family members.
From that day Jaky and l were not as close as we use to be. I would stay out waiting for him but he would never show up. I did this for quite a while and then I gave up. Years went by and he never came out. At a point I forgot him and even how he looked. I just had this not so clear memory of him.
I was sixteen and I had completed my first year of college. I was coming home for the summer vacation. I took the subway cause mum was busy as always and dad as a surgeon was always in the hospital. On the subway, I spotted this cute guy. He had just the right size of muscles. He had the perfect complexion. He had no tattoos, he was perfect. I stared at him all through the drive. He kinda stared back but I wasn't so sure.
Yh, Yh I know he looked older. It was not like I wanted anything to do with him. The bus finally stopped and I was alighting. He also stood up with his luggage. Damn! ....HE WAS TALL. That made him seem even cuter. I tried as hard to avoid all eye contact with him. I rushed out hurriedly and called for an uber. In the car he kept flashing through my mind......His muscles....eyes..... Just thinking of that made me happy. The uber car had stopped but I was lost in my imagination. He woke me from my day dream when he asked for the money.
After I paid him and I turned to the door, it was open and I went in. All I wanted to do was sleep cause it was a really tiring day. It was rather unusual that the house was quite. Normally mummy would be watching "Telemundo" and as for daddy he would make endless calls. Mummy and daddy would fight for the remote control when daddy wanted to watch the news.
The lights were off. I so much wanted to lie in the comfortable double chair and just sleep. I switched on.the light and I heard a loud sound...."SURPRISE!!!". It was Mummy, and some family members and friends. They had this huge smiles on their faces. I had no choice than to smile. I was tired. Gradma kept on squeezing my cheeks and everyone kept on talking about how I had grown. And of course people looked at me with spite in their eyes. Especially those old people. They kept on talking about my dressing and how my parents had thrown me into college to spoil.
"Riley!" I heard my mother call. I turned only to see Mr. Hebertson, there, in my house, for the first time in years. I was surprised but glad that all that drama was finally over. Mum later proposed a toast to me, Riley James and my return home. She cracked a joke about me wanting to come home and I'm finally home. Mr Hebertson chuckled rudely and it made mum angry. She asked, "Any problem Mr. Hebertson?" Then he said rudely "Oh no just sick and tired of you cracking dry jokes". Mum was angry. What even got on her nerves was the way the guests laughed. She felt angry and disgraced. Mum out of anger said "of course they will be dry to you since are so old and have such a hard and dry brain." Everyone laughed and mum felt proud and continued with her toast though Mr. Hebertson walked out. The party went on for sometime and later ended.
Mum sat me down and talked and talked. She asked me about school and advised me to learn. After some time she was finally done. I went to my room and inhaled the sweet scent of it. I rushed to the windows, opened it and looked at the neighbourhood. I felt a relief of finally being home. My eyes rolled through the relaxing site.
Then I saw something. I rolled back my eyes to see it. To my surprise the thing I saw wasn't a thing, it was someone.
I forced my eyes only to realise that it was the cute guy I saw on the subway. "Does he stay around?" Was the question I asked myself. I still stared at him. Then he noticed. Without hesitation I shut the window and closed the curtain. My heart fell into my belly. Something about him reminded me of someone. The memories flashed through my brain. I still couldn't make him out. Suddenly I wasn't tired anymore. Just then it became clear.......Jaky?
