Chapter 6 - Wash It All Away, As Blood in the Rain
That following morning, Harlee rose from her bed and stretched her sore body. She had been kept awake, by the sound of the phantom drum again, as she had most nights since arriving. Rousing herself from her sleepy state, Harlee rose from the bed and walked out into the hall. After a brief stay in the restroom, she peeked again on Dahlia, checking and caring for her personal needs.
She was glad to see that her wounds had already healed quite well but still worried. Dahlia slept most of the day, though Matthew assured her, she had awoken and eaten a small amount each day, before returning to sleep. Harlee kissed her friend on the forehead and left the room.
Back out in the hallway, she heard the sounds of Father Matthew, moving about in the kitchen and followed them. The elderly man smiled and nodded his head to her, as he went to work, mixing ingredients. Looking into the sitting room, Harlee saw that John had fallen asleep on the couch, mouth wide open.
"He had a rough night, I suspect." Father Matthew said. "It was tough but he could recall a great number of details, for Maxwell to gather a lead from." Father Matthew leaned in close, being sure to look around before speaking.
"If you're up for another hunt tonight, I'd suggest staying close to my father." He said. Harlee nodded her head, as she took a sip from the cup of coffee, Matthew had already prepared for her.
Sitting in one of the chairs, Harlee laid back as she saw Almalexia walk out of Maxwell's room, wearing practically nothing. Having caught her attention, Harlee kept watching as Almalexia, turned and leaned against the bedroom wall as Maxwell, in only his boxer briefs, stepped into the doorway. Almalexia draped herself over his shoulders, kissing on his neck, as he attempted to dress. Noticing Harlee, Maxwell shut the door.
Harlee looked down, suddenly interested in the contents of her cup as she blushed, a slight smile on her face. A moment later, Almalexia entered the kitchen, fully dressed, eyes filled with the promise of death as she glared at Harlee.
"You'd think a creature in heat, such as yourself, would find its own kind to pant and beg at." She scoffed as she went by.
"I would have thought freaks, such as you, with no feelings, souls or hearts, would be used to being on display." Harlee replied.
Almalexia ignored Harlee, entirely. She gently touched Matthew on the shoulder and said goodbye before leaving. A moment thereafter, Maxwell exited his room, suited in his regular attire, fixing the cuffs on his shirt.
"Will you be heading out again, tonight?" Harlee asked. Maxwell stopped and slowly rolled his gaze over to Matthew, who averted his.
"That's the plan." He growled.
"I want to come with you again." Harlee said.
"I'm not going to save you, if you are caught in the line of fire again." He warned.
"I understand." Harlee nodded. "Where and when do we go?" Maxwell sighed as he sat down at the table, massaging the corners of his eyes.
"Tonight, after nightfall. There is an abandoned warehouse, in the old business district. It seems many of the slaves, were held there. They have likely been moved at this point but perhaps we will find something of interest. I will suspect that a number of wolves are still active in the area. It is a popular place for people to frequent, or go missing from." He said. Harlee nodded her head as she thought on the mission.
"Do you wish for me to provide back up, or would you rather I go in beside you?" She asked.
"What does it matter?" He asked.
