Chapter 1. "Nice to meet you."
18/4/14
Violet Mae.
It was just a regular autumn day. I was walking from my small house to my best-friend's, Kathryn Leicester, house whom she shared with Sam Howell- her house-mate and close friend of mine. My eyes met the regularly small house on the corner of the road, besides a park and with a five minute walking distance to my own home.
Kathryn and Sam had only moved here a few months ago, yet Sam just arrived back from America- where her fiancé, Lucien Dubenko lives. He works as a surgeon, as does she, but his work means a lot to him and Sam is taking a medical course over here in London. So the two take turns to visit each other every month. Expensive? Sure is. But both of them work for a lot of money each week! (You'd be lucky to spend Christmas with this couple.)
Kathryn is a pathologist and also takes pride in her work. She, along with Sam, is one of the smartest people I know. You'd be amazed at some of the things she says, she'll tell you a random fact at any given moment- and they all don't fail to interest me. Most of the week, when she isn't out solving deaths and what not, she's always there to help me and never fails to cheer me up. I'm lucky I have a friend like her around.
Now me? Oh, I just write books, they get published, they get read, you know. But you know when some people say that their lives are in no way interesting? I like to think otherwise; everyone has a story, people just have different ways of telling them. My life isn't always the best, but it's sure gosh dang great- and I wouldn't wish for it to be any other way. I choose to tell my stories through stories, and people relate to them. And now I'm slowly working up the chain to a bestseller, with three books published, and one award for "Best Uprising Author" in 2013. A year later, I've almost achieved all I wished to.
Now as I walk up the front patio steps and knock on the rusted red door of 34 Connors Lane, I realise something. I may have achieved all of this as passing University, getting my dream job, etc, but.. I really haven't had a proper relationship in about 2 years. And the last one didn't end too well...
"Violet!" I am hug-tackled to the ground by who I suspect to be Kathryn, not even a second after the door opens.
"Kathy!" I grin, as I am helped back up by her. We give each other a proper hug before heading inside. Sam emerges from the kitchen down the hall, a bunch of tulips in her hands.
"Hello!" She beams before we exchange a hug too.
"How was your flight?" I ask, and we all walk into the kitchen to sit around the dining table. Sam puts the flowers in a vase of water in the middle of the table and arranges them as we speak.
"Fine, fine! Lucien is doing well, he says he might be able to stay a couple more days on his next visit. How are you doing?" She asks, placing one tulip in a certain way and fixes the leaves hanging out the vase.
Kathryn stands up and fills the kettle with water, gesturing if me and Sam want a tea as she shakes a teabag. I shake my head and Sam nods. "Two sugars, please."
"Great! I've had news that I might be a best-seller soon, but only time will tell." I smile and Kathryn walks back with two mugs and two small jars on a tray, placing it on the table. She pours milk into the two mugs and adds two sugar cubes to one, and stirring before handing it to Sam then sitting back down with her own.
"Sounds fab! You starting on another one soon?" Kathryn asks now before taking a sip from her beverage. I nod and rest my chin on my hand, propped up by my elbow on the table.
"Yeah but I can't think of a plot.." I sigh and look out to the window above the sink. My thoughts are soon distracted by the doorbell ringing and Sam shoots up.
"It's my brother!" She chirps and walks quickly out the room.
"Sam said she's got someone who you might want to meet." Kathryn winks and I raise an eyebrow.
"Is Samantha setting me up now hmm?" I chuckle and sit back in my seat, as we hear greetings exchanged in the hallway.
"Yeah, a friend of her brothers she says. She reckons you two would be a perfect match." Kath smiles widely, seeing Sam walk back in followed by three other men, one being Dan- Sam's younger brother by 6 about years.
Behind him emerges his bestfriend, named Phil Lester (who Kathryn has had her eye on for a while now ) ;). He has jet black hair and blue eyes, and always wears the best T-Shirts.
Then followed by another man, who I do not know the name of. This must be my 'set-up'. His green eyes catch me almost immediately and I find my self staring.
Kathryn nudges me and I turn my head to her, giving her a look as if to say; "Am I going red? Oh my gosh I am aren't I!". She nods, smiling and I sigh.
"Oh, Violet- I don't believe you and Pj have met. Vi- This is Pj, Pj this is Violet." I turn my head to look back at him and he puts his hand out to shake, which I do and he smiles.
"Let's head into the living room- it's getting a bit crowded in here." Kathryn suggests and we all agree. We move into the next room and sit among the two couches and armchair- I took the armchair.
I continue to study Pj as they continue to converse. He intrigues me somehow with his curly hair, green eyes and sense of style- skinny jeans, pumps and a video game related shirt.
I look down at myself. Black tights, baby blue skirt and creamy white sweater. My make-up, simple as usual, was accompanied well with my natural hair colour; white/light-blonde/light-pink, which today was tied up in a messy bun. Then my shoes, oh they're my favourite, my black boots.
I am brought into the conversation as Sam mentions me. "Storyteller? Hey, Violet. You're an author, you two have something in common, ey!" Kathryn looks at me as if to say "she's not very good at this." And I nod.
"What's your last name?" Phil asks and I turn my head to him, sitting on the other couch- besides Kathryn.
"Uh, Mae. Violet Mae." I answer.
"Isn't Mae a middle name?" Dan thinks out loud, and Sam shoots him a 'look'. "What?" He frowns.
"Yeah, it was. But I use that as my last name because I didn't know who my parents were, so I chose not to be part of their family if they didn't want me to be a part of it in the first place." I sit back in my seat and sigh.
Dan nods slowly. "Sorry."
"It's okay." I look back out the window, and Sam tries to change the subject. But Phil goes back to it.
"Hey, I've read your books!" He smiles and my eyes widen.
"Really?" I sit up and he nods. "Did-Did you like them?"
"Loved them! I'm trying to get Dan to read them now." I grin and look at Dan.
"I'm still halfway through the second Hunger Games!" He shrugs and we all chuckle.
"What type of stories do you write?" Pj asks me and we look at him now.
"Well, I like to write fantasy's a lot, they're two of my three books, then the last one published was about a girl who was lost and was building herself up to achieve her dreams."
"Just like you." Kathryn says, smiling. I shrug.
"What about you?" I ask Pj, and he sits back.
"Anything, really. Weird and random as they can be- the better." I nod and smile.
Then the others talk again in conversation, and it's just me and Pj, staring at each other, in a friendly way. We keep smiling and he leans forward slightly to say something.
"Nice to meet you, Violet Mae." He says, with a side smile.
"Nice to meet you, Pj.."
"Liguori." I nod and grin.
"Nice to meet you, Pj Liguori."
