Chapter 3. "Flowers, for me?"

22/6/14

Violet Mae

I had always wondered why Lavenders are my favourite flower. I say this as I fix the current bunch of lavenders sitting in my white vase, sitting on the dining room table.

Thinking back, the question had always referred back to my nana. Since my parents had left me with her to move back to Italy, they had always been my favourite.

She'd always take me flower picking in the lavender field, and she'd always some how.. smell of them. As if it was her constant perfume, though whenever I looked upon her dressing table- all I saw was her hairbrush, she didn't like to wear perfume. It must've just been her natural scent, even on the days we weren't picking lavender.

My nana was very kind, she'd tie small bunches of the purple flowers with a ribbon and give them to our neighbours. Everyone loved my nana. Sadly, she passed away when I was only 14.

Since then, her friend, Maria, who'd I had known as my Auntie, took care of me from then. She would always listen to me play the viola, just as nana did.

But it wasn't the same. Life without nana was like a piano without the tune. Our special bond since I was a child, it made me who I am today.

I looked over at the picture of her on top of the fireplace, I never go by a day without missing her.

Just as I was about to turn away, I hear a knock at the door. My eyes looked at the clock. It's only midday, it could be the postman. I put down the box I was holding and walked towards the front door, wiping my hands on my jumper.

I went to answer it, and looked through the small window besides the door to see Pj Liguori, standing outside my door holding something in his hand. I smiled and unlocked my door.

"Oh, I didn't expect you to be in." He said, messing with his curls.

"I didn't expect you to be standing at my doorstep." I replied with a small smile.

He looked down, and I noticed that in his hands were a few flowers. I nodded towards thin as if to ask who they're for and he realise and became all flustered. "Oh I er, these are for you." Pj pushed out his hand towards me and I blushed.

"Flowers, for me?" I asked hesitantly, taking the small bouquet from his hand and inhaling the beautiful scent. He nodded. "For what occasion?" I asked, admiring the colours of the petals.

"Z-I just thought it'd be a nice.. friendly gesture, I guess." He grinned. I gave him a hug, my arms around his shoulders loosely, and I felt his arms wind slowly around my waist, hugging me back. When we pulled away I thanked him for the flowers and asked if he'd like to come inside.

"Oh, am I interrupting anything?" He gestured towards the stack of boxes behind me. I then remembered, I was clearing out my attic. Is it really a great time to let him in..?

"Well er I'm just cleaning out some space in my loft, so I'm not sure if you'd want to come in really.." He shook his head.

"I could help you?" Pj asked.

"Would you? Oh you shouldn't you've already done enough." I smiled sweetly, holding the flowers close. Pj shook his head.

"I'd be delighted to help you." Our eyes met and we both smiled.

"If you don't mind." I let him in and shut the door behind him, then walking to the kitchen to get a vase for the flowers. After retrieving a thin glass vase from the cupboard, I filled it halfway with water, trimmed the ends of the stems and arranged the flowers in it neatly.

When I walked back in Pj had put his coat on the back of a chair and was looking at some pictures on the fireplace. "Hope you don't mind." He smiled and I shook my head.

"They're there for a reason." I said as I placed the vase in the windowsill. He nodded and pointed at the one of me and my nana.

"Is this your.."

"Grandma. She raised me. But I preferred to call her nana." He nodded his head and turned on his heel to face me. "Thank you for the flowers, again." I smiled and he shook his head.

"It's my pleasure. Now.. Shall we get started?"
