Chapter I : 10th Birthday
Albarty entered into the small room with quiet and calm steps. He made the cover away which was put as a door and took a look. He has made almost everything in this room from the oaks in the forest. There was a small writing table just next to the entrance. The table with simple and sharp lines was full of Thorlac's drawings. Right opposite the table there was a bed and a small wardrobe with two drawers. The kid was sleeping. When he turned towards him, the old man saw how old the cover he uses as a quilt was. The time has come to buy a new one. The sun was shining through the window and the light was touching Thorlac's face and a small part of the room. He took a deep breath and shouted :
"Thorlac! You little varmint! Do you know what time it is!?"
Thorlac heard the strong voice and he woke up starteld. He slowly straightened up and looked out the window. The sun just showed itself, the cold could still be felt. "Damn it!", he said to himself quietly and shouted without noticing that the old man was standing at the entrance "Come on uncle Al! It can't be later than seven o'clock."
"Maybe", said Albarty, "But we have to hurry up and finish the work early. So we can enjoy this special day, can't we ?" He laughed and got on the way to the small field near to the hut. The field was just a couple of potato lines and seasonal flowers. Today is special because it is Thorlac's 10th birthday. He put on his rags for fieldwork and got out. The only thing he could think today, was the answer of Albarty when he asked where he comes from. The old man has said that he couldn't understand it yet. But the dream he had tonight showed him that he should ask some questions. He eagerly started to work.
It was as monotonous as always. The thorns hurted him once more. Albarty shouted at him for every potato he stepped on again.
When he was chopping some wood for fire at the end of the day, he felt a hand on his shoulder. "That's enough Thorlac, come in." He hit the last wooden block with the axe and they got in together. When he was in, Thorlac was just shocked. That was not something he could see everyday. In the middle of the small table, a huge pig, the steam could still be seen. Two new wooden tankards full of red wine. And a big loaf of bread. Thorlac couldn't stand without staring at the dinner. He asked quietly just like a whisper, "Uncle Al, how could you find all of this ?". Albarty looked at him and smiled, "After a long and hard time with work, this is our prise. Now sit and let us enjoy the feast." Thorlac got to the table with quick steps. While he was taking the spork in the hand, Albarty spoke with his strong voice once more, "Stop right there! We have to pray first." They thanked the god together, and then started to enjoy this awesome dinner. Wine was something new to little Thorlac. And they could eat a pig just after the good harvest times. They ate slowly. Then Thorlac asked the question he was thinking about the whole day, "Uncle Al, do you remember what you have said, when I asked a few years ago where I come from ?"
"Yes son, of course." said Albarty, "I have said that you couldn't understand it yet."
"I... I had a dream tonight. It was different than the others. It was so dark around me. I could see just - someone but I couldn't realise who he or she was. The only light was from the sword, the ring, the amulet and the crown. When he got close to me, I realised that he has redhair just like me. He slowly moved towards me and got through. It was so weird. I was awake and sweaty. I couldn't understand anything. Uncle Al, do you have any ideas what this dream could be about ? What could it mean ?"
"This is a interesting dream, son. But I guess, you will understand what it could mean, after the things I'll tell you. When I was a boy, like you, our mothers used to tell us a myth before sleep. It says; a very long time ago there was alchemists, who was trying to make the humanity a better race, a much more powerful race. These people always produced new elixirs. But they knew the risks that these elixirs have within and they didn't want to take the risks at the beginning. The kingdoms were afraid of the rebellions, which can take place once people get this elixirs. So they didn't let the prisoners to be test subjects. The normal populace wanted to stay away from that curse, too. So the alchemists had no other chance. They started to try the elixirs on themselves. After these experiments a huge part of them lost their lives. And almost as much as them was unsuccesful and continued to live in the normal way. But a couple of them could find the true mix, they gained some powers. Some could control anything around them, even give shapes to them. Some could rule the humanmind, some could contact animals and order them. Even some gained two or three skills at the same time. One of them was the king of the most powerful and biggest kingdom, Thogrûl. An honest and just king that wasn't blinded by power. But the all kings on the world including him were thinking that the evolution of alchemy must be blocked. For a brighter tomorrow, some people had to be sacrificed. It was true that Alchemy gives mankind great power but it was also a curse which have great risks. And that curse had to be removed from the world. People died. Events have been seen which could be named as genocide. The king left himself and three men for one last thing. They were the source of the Thogrûl's might. The younger brother of the king, Thoralf had the ability of giving shape to the substances around him. Willump could enter the minds of people and manipulate them. And Igor could communicate with animals and give orders. Everything this four alchemists knew have been collected and made a book."
"What was the purpose of the book, uncle Al ?"
"Everything has its time, Thorlac. The king has told a prophecy. One day, this world will have to face its biggest disaster. And only the heir of the king will be able to read the book and save the world. The book has been sealed, divided to four fragments, and materialised. The first fragment was Igor's sword. A dazzling smithery masterpiece with its golden handle. Thoralf's amulet and Willump's ring were the most glamorous jewelries on the world. And the king's crown was the most magnificent fragment of all with no doubt. These three fragments were buried to different tombs at different places on the world with their owners by the king himself. It was king's turn. Before sealing the three tombs, the king divided a mysterious note to three pieces and inscribed them on the inner side of the graves. These pieces would tell the place of the king's tomb, when they all come together. In the end he buried himself alive and slept to the death with a great kingdom he left behind."
