I looked towards Derek and saw him talking to a guy. I just looked down at my feet waiting for them to finish. Well, that was until I heard my name come up in conversation.
" Is that the new chick in town?" Derek's friend asks.
"Yeah, her name is Emmalyn Hayes. Anyway man we've got to get her to her second hour." Derek says giving the guy a fist bump. Derek turns towards me and puts his arm over my shoulder, making me jump a little. I don't think he notices and he keeps walking. We reach the door to what I assume is my second hour. English is one of my best subjects so hopefully the teacher's nice.
" I'll be right out here when the bell rings. Have a good day." Derek says before walking to his class.
I walk in and immediately regret it. Everyone's staring at me, including the teacher. The teacher shakes her head quickly and smiles at me.
"Well class as I mentioned at the beginning of class we have a new student. Her name is Emmalyn Hayes. Please make her feel welcome. I'm Ms.H, please have a seat and welcome to Shore High." Ms. H says with a bright smile.I go and find an empty seat in the back corner of the classroom and listen to what Ms. H says. I look at my schedule and see that I have Calculus next. Great, it's my best subject. I wonder if Derek and I have any classes together. Hopefully I do, it'll be nice to have a semi- familiar face.
The bell rings and I take my time leaving the class room not really knowing how far my class will be from my English class. I walk out the door and immediately see Derek across the hall leaning on a row of lockers, but he's not alone. He's lip locking some random chick.
"Derek, I need to know where my class is." I say not caring if I interrupt them.
"Oh right, I'll see you later Haley" He tell the girl sending her a quick wink. She glares at me for ruining their little 'moment'.
Derek and I walk to my third hour and he walks in with me, I guess we have this class together. I introduce myself to the teacher, who introduces himself as Mr. Luis, and walk to an empty desk, which is conveniently right next to Derek. I don't talk to anyone, including Derek, I just write down the series of equations on the board.
The rest of the day goes like it has been, Derek drops me off at the class and walks me to my next class. I don't sit with anyone at lunch, nor do I eat. I keep getting stared at by people wondering why I look beat up and people just wondering who I am. I just want today to finish so I can go home and sleep or go look for a job.
When the bell rings for the end of school. I quickly walk towards the front doors. I hear Derek calling my name but I just ignore him. I know he didn't do anything wrong and I shouldn't ignore him but I don't want him to ask any questions.
When I get home I notice Troy's car is gone, thank God. I quickly slip into the house, locking the door behind me. I slip into the shower, washing today's stress away. When I get out I realize how hungry I am. I walk down to the kitchen, hoping we have something decent to eat. I make a quick sandwich and walk into the living room, surprised it's not a complete mess. As soon as I sit down and take a bite of my sandwich I hear the doorbell ring, I groan as I get up. I take a minute to chew before I open the door.
When I open the door I immediately regret it. I stare into the eyes of a semi- pissed off Derek. I don't understand why he's mad but I open the door a little wider so he can come in and he does so without speaking. Once the door is closed I take a deep breath and turn around, meeting his eyes instantly.
"Hey Derek, um, how'd you figure out where I live?" I asked curiously.
"I walked after you because I live down the street and it's the same way I get home." He said quietly.
I didn't respond I just nodded slightly. I motioned to the living room so we weren't still standing in the hallway. I sat down where I was previously sitting. My sandwich still sitting on the coffee table. I motioned for Derek to sit down and he did but not comfortably."What kind of life do you live Emmalyn?" Derek asks randomly. I stared at him for being so blunt. I didn't have time to answer because I heard a car door shut. I whipped my head around towards the door.
