Lincoln High School, Nebraska
Shit. I should've known this would happen. Any party that Felix threw inevitably ended in crime.
Ended in blood.
No, don't think like that. You can keep it under control. You have to. You can't let them know. Just remember. The mask responds to you, and you alon-
"Cry!" I jumped at Felix's voice. He was leaning out the broken window of Lincoln High, a hand reaching down to help me up.
"I got it," I grunted, hoisting myself up onto the brick windowsill. Felix wobbled a bit, pressing a hand to his heart in mock hurt.
"You don't trust me?" he gasped. I rolled my eyes, though I knew he couldn't see.
"Pewds, you've had four shots," I deadpanned.
"Whatever, bro," he laughed, stumbling into the abandoned classroom. He tripped, cutting his hand on the broken glass. The acrid smell of blood reached my nostrils, and it took all my self control not to lose it.
"Hey, Pewdie, you okay?" slurred Ken. He stumbled forward and wound up tripping over the blond man. They lay in a heap on the floor, giggling like maniacs.
"Oh my God, you two," laughed Michelle, who was casually leaning against a bookcase. Her hair was pulled back in a ponytail and she was dressed in jeans and a black hoodie. Action clothes.
"Sh-shaddup, Minx!" yelled Felix from under Ken as I jumped down and landed beside them in a crouch. Michelle grabbed my hand and pulled me up, and I caught the scent of something...something familiar. Before I could figure out what it was, Michelle had moved on to Felix and Ken, roughly hauling them up by the backs of their shirts.
"Are we gonna do this, or not?" she asked impatiently. The two just giggled drunkenly. I rolled my eyes.
"Hey, Minx, maybe we should just deface the Bird's room by ourselves, since these two alcoholics can't keep the fuck up," I suggested.
"Hey!" protested Felix. "It was my idea in the first place."
"Yeah, don't take all the fun," drawled Ken.
"Then get your lazy asses in gear," snapped Michelle. The two ran out into the hall, whooping and yelling like deranged monkeys, leaving me alone with Michelle. She rolled her eyes. "Can you believe them?"
"Hey cut 'em some slack," I joked. "They're PewdieKen, you can't expect them to go with the plan."
Michelle laughed and I caught myself smiling. I quickly schooled my expression to a laid-back smirk and gestured to the door with a flourish.
"After you," I offered. Michelle rolled her eyes. She briskly stepped into the hall, but not before I noticed a small smile playing across her lips.
We jogged to catch up with Felix and Ken, who were already far ahead. Michelle skidded to a stop in front of me, holding up a hand for me to wait.
"Minx?" I hissed. She gestured for me to come forward, holding a finger to her lips. I peered around the corner. A late-night janitor and a teacher who was working after-hours had found Felix and Ken. The fat, aged cleaner was brandishing a sharpened broomstick, keeping them at a distance while the spindly teacher hid behind him. I looked at Michelle questioningly, but her eyes were closed tightly and her face was pale. I opened my mouth to ask if she was alright, but at that instant, the janitor swung the broomstick, catching Felix on the cheek. The tangy, iron smell of blood filled the air, and I snapped.
I leaped forward with an animalistic growl, tackling the janitor to the ground and punching him in the face. Blood flew up and hit my mask. I was vaguely aware of high pitched laughter in the background, but I was solely focused on the feeling of bone crunching under my fists.
I felt a hand on my shoulder and turned around to see Michelle standing there. Her normally half-lidded, sarcastic eyes had taken on a wild gleam. A few strands of purple hair had fallen out of her ponytail and her hoodie was unzipped at the top, adding to her look of disarray. To be honest, it was dead sexy.
I tried to get my blood-crazed mind under control.
"Minx, I," I fumbled for the right words to explain why I had just nearly killed a man with my bare fists. She could no doubt see the way my mask had changed too, even with blood splatters covering a good portion of it. A wave of defeat hit me like a sack of bricks. After all this time keeping it a secret... "I promise, I can expla-"
She silenced me by kissing me, the taste of blood invading my mouth where the teacher had split her lip.
"Did you really think," she asked quietly. "That you were the only one who's a bit crazy?"
