"Yuuta-kun!"
You throw your arms around him when you see him at the base of the mountain, heart thudding with excitement. The fresh air up here feels crisp and free, and with your boyfriend's arms circling your waist, it's even better.
He smiles that familiar, slightly shy smile of his and ruffles your hair. "Hey. You ready for this?"
"Are you?" You grin up at him. "We're going hand-gliding today! No chickening out, okay?"
Yuuta scratches the back of his head and glances up toward the cliff where the gliders are waiting. "Y-Yeah, I'm ready... mostly."
You pout. "You promised you'd do this with me!"
"I am doing it," he says quickly. "I just didn't know it'd be from that high up..."
You lean in and whisper teasingly, "Don't worry. I'll hold your hand the whole time."
Before Yuuta can respond, a calm voice calls out, "Oh? Looks like we're not the only couple being lovey-dovey today."
You turn to see Fuji Shuusuke, Yuuta's older brother, walking up with his girlfriend Naomi. She's holding onto his arm with both hands, eyes sparkling with excitement.
"Fuji-senpai!" you call out, waving. "Naomi-san!"
"We're all set, right?" Naomi asks. "Gliders are ready. The weather's perfect. And Fuji already double-checked everything like three times."
Yuuta mutters, "Of course he did..."
Fuji just chuckles and adjusts his gloves. "Better safe than sorry, Yuuta."
Soon, the four of you are standing at the edge of the cliff, gliders ready and harnesses secure. The wind rushes past your ears, and you can feel your pulse pounding with anticipation.
"Oh my gosh," Naomi squeals, hugging Fuji's arm tighter. "This is gonna be so fun!"
"Let's take the lead," Fuji says with a mischievous smile, and the two of them run forward and leap gracefully into the open air. Naomi's scream of joy echoes across the valley.
You grab Yuuta's hand. "Ready?"
He hesitates. "Uhh..."
"Yuuta-kun." You look at him, trying not to laugh. "Come on. Your brother just jumped off a cliff with a girl clinging to him and didn't even blink."
"That's because he's a weirdo," Yuuta mutters, but doesn't let go of your hand.
You tug him forward. "You trust me, right?"
He glances at you. "Always."
You both run. Wind in your face. A moment of free-fall—and then...
"We're flying!" you shout, eyes wide, laughing with exhilaration.
Yuuta blinks rapidly. "W-We are? Wait—this is—woah! Oh my god!"
His nervousness melts away into pure wonder as you both glide together over the trees. The landscape below is painted in greens and browns, the horizon stretching out into the blue sky. His laughter mixes with yours as he releases your hand and steadies himself.
"I can't believe this actually worked!" he yells over the wind.
"I told you it would!"
He glances over at you, eyes bright. "You're amazing."
You smile. "So are you."
Then, without really thinking, you lean toward him, the wind rushing around you, and press your lips to his cheek.
His eyes widen, and he turns his head. "H-Hey—!"
But you're already grinning. "What? You're blushing!"
"You just kissed me mid-air!" he exclaims, but his smile is all softness.
You laugh. "Want me to do it again?"
"...Maybe," he says, and leans in this time.
You meet him halfway.
The kiss is gentle and a little clumsy, but it makes your chest feel light, like you're floating for more reasons than one. Yuuta's hand finds yours again, and his other arm wraps around your waist as the gliders drift side-by-side in a smooth current.
You feel him shift closer and suddenly, his glider wobbles.
"Uh... Yuuta?"
"...I think I accidentally let go of my glider."
"WHAT?!"
You instinctively tighten your grip around him, guiding both of you back toward your glider. He clings to you as the two of you awkwardly maneuver it down.
Eventually, you land—more or less—at the bottom of the mountain, a little off-course, a little tangled, but laughing breathlessly.
Fuji and Naomi are waiting.
"Took you two long enough," Naomi teases.
"We had some... aerial complications," you say, brushing leaves out of your hair.
Fuji raises an eyebrow. "From what we saw, it looked more like aerial romance."
"Aniki!" Yuuta groans, red-faced.
"Fuji-kun, stop teasing them," Naomi says, nudging him in the ribs.
"Gomen," Fuji says smoothly, smiling. "It was cute."
Yuuta turns to you, still blushing but grinning now. "So... another round?"
You nod, slipping your hand back into his. "Yeah. But this time, don't let go of the glider."
"No promises," he murmurs, eyes soft as they meet yours.
As the four of you begin to climb back up the mountain trail, you feel Yuuta's fingers tighten around yours.
And this time, he doesn't let go.
