Second Year:
James has romantic feelings for Lily and confessed it to her but she didn't feel the same way. That made James sad.
Third Year:
Remus confessed to James, Peter and Sirius that he is a werewolf. So, in order to help his "little furry problem" they practiced their Animagus forms.
Fourth Year:
Lily became the popular and smart witch in Hogwarts, this made all boys from the four houses (including James) chasing after her. Lily and Severus started slowly to drifted apart in their friendship because of their house rivalries. This made Lily very sad despite all the Slytherins calling her a "filthy little mudblood" but she just ignored that very bad nickname.
