CHAPTER FIFTEEN: I Will Avenge

After Tony fixes his suit, within minutes, we're back in the air and headed for Stark Tower in downtown Manhattan. Instead of going with Steve, Natasha, and Clint in the Quinjet, I grab a hold of the Iron-Man's arm. "Don't think you're going to try to take that wanker down without me," I tell him.

Tony's faceplate rolls back into his helmet, and he sighs. "Fine. Grab the hands. I'll carry you." He hands me a small ear piece. "Use this to talk to JARVIS and I if you need to. I've already given the rest of the team theirs."

I pop the the piece into my right ear and do as he says. He lifts off the ground, and we become airborne. "Try not to drop me, Stark."

"I'll try my best, Barnes."

Moments later, Tony and I come sputtering into New York City. We barely keep propulsion stable long enough to make it across the river, over the bridge, and into the area above Stark Tower. What we see there is frightening.

Dr. Erik Selvig has a machine on the roof of the Tower that's glowing with the power being drained from the Tesseract. He grins as it shines brighter, and I can feel the static energy radiating off it in waves.

"Sir," JARVIS says to Tony, "I've turned off the Arc reactor, but the device is already self-sustaining."

Tony pushes to a halt and looks down at Dr. Selvig and his machine. "Shut it down, Dr. Selvig," Tony orders from the air.

Dr. Selvig turns towards us. "It's too late!" he shouts. "She can't stop now." He circles the machine and the Tesseract with a smile. "She wants to show us something! A new universe."

Tony sighs. "Stop, drop, and roll, Barnes." He drops me down to the rooftop. I land on my feet, finding cover behind one of Dr. Selvig's pieces of equipment. Tony pulls up his hands, saying, "Okay," as he fires two shots towards the circle of energy that's protecting the Tesseract.

Rather than destroy it, Tony's weapons ricochet outwards in every direction. Tony is blown away, and Selvig is knocked off his feet. I crouch down in order to dodge the canon fire. "Tony!" I shout, seeing the Iron-Man attempt to find his balance in mid-air.

"I'm good, Barnes. Don't worry."

"The barrier is pure energy," JARVIS alerts us. "It's unbreachable."

"Yeah, I got that." Tony looks downwards towards something on a lower level as I pull myself up from the ground. "Hey, Emma, look who decided to show up?"

I lean over the edge of the Tower and spot a smug Loki standing a few stories down. "Plan B?" I ask.

"Plan B," Tony agrees, and I jump towards his outstretched hand. We hover down a few dozen feet and he places me on the walkway into the Tower. Loki looks at us from the other side of the Tower, following the two of us inside.

"Sir, the Mark-7 is not ready for deployment," JARVIS warns.

"Then skip the spinning rims. We're on the clock."

I walk ahead of Tony, hearing the machines behind me taking apart his suit as he follows. By the time we reach the interior, he's just Tony. He heads for the bar as Loki begins to speak.

"Please, tell me you're going to appeal to my humanity," the mischief god chuckles, staff clutched in his right hand.

"Actually," I reply, giving Tony a chance to head over towards the drinks, "we're planning to threaten you."
