Laria woke suddenly, a sharp pain moving through her arm. 'Where am I?' she wondered, then remembered being attacked by a madman and hearing Eiras' scream rip through the cold air. She was in prison. They had been caught.

Then the memories of the dual link with the strange boy crossed her mind. Did Eira actually think of her as a sister? So many things were going through her mind that it was giving her a headache!

She had a cast on her arm and could smell the sterile room. It was a cold blue-white like the rest of the prison. The wooden bed she lay on keeping her warm. A small fire blazed in the fireplace, heating the room and causing some of the ice to melt.

Laria sat up, trying not to put to much weight on her injured arm. Great, she thought, they'll probably put me back into the room with that psycho. She wondered what he told the guards. Probably that they had attacked him and he was defending himself. Good thing is that would be hard to believe, seeing as she and Ire were young girls whereas he was a full grown man.

Suddenly the door opened, causing Laria to jump and look fearfully at it. A guard stood in the doorway, observing Laria from afar. She then walked forward and sat on a small stool that Laria hadn't noticed.

"Matthew told us you attacked him" she said, shaking her head. "none of us believed him, seeing as he had you cornered and there were no signs that you had hurt him" At this, Laria smiled. It was good to know at least one person didn't find them guilty of all crimes, with or without evidence.

"Thank you. For not believing him when he said those horrible things. It's nice to have an acquaintance." Laria said, once again struggling to sit up. The guard helped her into a sitting position. Laria got comfortable and gave a short laugh. It was ironic that they had been fine for years, but once they were caught they were beaten up. A 13-year-old girl, beat up on her first day.... of prison!

The guard sighed and nodded. "I should be going now, my shift starts in ten minutes. I just came to check that you were okay." she said, getting up and dusting off her pants. She smiled and quietly said "My mother was a Shifter. She was killed in the riots." and left, closing the door firmly behind her.

Laria woke up after spending 8 weeks in the hospital room, waiting for her arm to heal. The doctor put a splint on it to set the break and told her to rest in the hospital for seven to ten weeks until it was healed. Every day was a bore, dragging by and leaving her tired and worn out. Each week, she would try to do new things with her broken arm, from holding a pen to simply moving it up and down.

When the cast was finally off, she realized that over all this time she hadn't seen or heard from Eira. Odd. By this time, the Warden had moved the two girls to a cell with the only person who could even look at them without trying to punch them in the face. With the strange boy.
