Chapter 4
The secondary schoolers hopped off the carriage that looked too similar to the ones in fairy tale books and proceeded to descend the stairs leading to the abandoned underground subway. "You go home okay?" Dhiv whispered softly, stroking the bridge of Anis' nose. "I'll call you later when we're done." The horse nuzzled its muzzle into her hand before galloping off like a magical unicorn back to the Shivraj household.
Once the girls reached the underground subway station, they were greeted with darkness, followed by loud hip hop music blasting through graffiti-stained walls. The no longer operational trains were pitch black, save for the occasional rays of light from torches where gangsters spent their nights playing poker.
"Nandoz Lab," a deep voice spoke, strong enough that it vibrated through their bones. The girls turned to the voice they had not heard for a long time now. The man gave them a lopsided grin and spread his arms wide, waiting for them to give him a hug. "Welcome back."
"Doctor Burn," Dhiv smiled and stepped into his embrace. "Where have you been? We haven't seen you around for the last few weeks."
"Yeah, where have you been? We had to deal with your stinkin' assistant for the past two weeks." Liz muttered grumpily, very much annoyed that Evan, Doctor Burn's right hand man, had been the one to take over the reins since the older man's unexplained disappearance. Throughout these two weeks he was in command, Liz had little to no control over her emotions and couldn't focus on her job with him being in charge like the man he was.
Onyx caught on her friend's muttering and smirked. "Too distracted by the chief's right hand man, are we?"
"Oh shut up," Liz scowled at her, trying her very best to fight the blush creeping up her cheeks. She was here as a professional. No way was she going to blush over something as silly as that. Especially not at work.
"What about you?" she retorted, her cheeks coloring anyway. "If I'm not mistaken, the last time we were here, you and Zen had a rather intimate moment."
At the mention of his name, Zen turned around to them from his position on the couch, particularly at the half Brazilian girl. Their eyes locked for a millisecond, sending sparks of electricity down Onyx's spine and spread giddy tingles throughout her whole body. She gave a squeak of embarrassment before spinning around to the opposite way, her face rivalling Liz's.
"Guys," Nell hissed at them. They were being too loud and unprofessional. They weren't allowed to have personal discussions at work, because it would then suggest a lack of commitment and leave hints on who they really were in real life. It wasn't that the underground organisation they were working with, Rebeliuz, was out to get them or had a grudge on them. No, these guys were the exact opposite of that. They were Nandoz Lab's allies and if there was anyone they could count on in the Underworld, it was them.
However, just because they were allies, didn't mean that it would be a good idea for them to reveal their true identities and hang out with each other as how old friends would. Rebeliuz was founded by Sage Fairburn (widely known as Doctor Burn) two years ago. Like their namesake, Rebeliuz were rebels towards the English society. They broke laws and treated the city walls as if they were their own.
Before long, they were an infamous group of gangsters. Ironic enough, they were rebels towards the rest of the Underworld too. They tracked criminals and hunted them down to bring justice to the streets of Manchester in hopes that it would one day become a peaceful one. Their goal was to be the only remaining gangsters in Manchester and to have no competition as to who was the better group. Though their work was good and brought peace and safety to the city, their cause was still a selfish one. Goals like these should never to be trusted, no matter what good they did.
