"Can I get you anything to drink my dear? Some tea maybe?" Mama Fay asked politely.
That's what everyone called Tanaka's mom.
She didn't even wait for an answer from Trevor and went on to pour a cup of tea for him as she spoke.
"You've come just in time, I have some freshly baked muffins to go with your tea. I made them with my little grand daughter, you'll love them." Mama Fay loved to spend time in the kitchen on days she managed to get home early from work.
"Thank you Mama, you trouble yourself. Mmmm these are delicious. Have you got a bakery hidden somewhere?" Trevor asked swallowing a mouthful.
Mama Fay laughed right from her soul. Compliment a woman on her hair, outfit and cooking and you've gained mileage. Meanwhile Isaac stood visibly uncomfortably, trying to come up with a plan to get this intruder out of their home before something damaging happened. How on earth would he do this without raising alarm with his mother? Isaac had to think fast.
"So you say you're an old friend of Tanaka's? Where do you know each other from?" Mama Fay asked as she grated her carrots.
"We met a few years ago, through mutual friends at an event actually." He said, very casually.
"Hmm, interesting." She said, studying his face. "Have we met before? You look very familiar. You look like..." her eyes stayed fixed on him but her voice drifted mid - sentence. Then she laughed to herself and shook her head.
"Trevor, do you want to come with me to the other lounge? The game's about to start"Isaac cut in. "Sorry mom, you know how big this one is tonight. Make or break!"
Isaac led him to the lounge quickly, trying his best to seem friendly and relaxed. As soon as he was sure they were out of ear shot he turned to Trevor -
"Why are you here?"
"Excuse me?" Trevor seemed confused, swallowing the last bite of his third muffin.
"Why... did you come to our house?" Isaac was never one for small talk or the mincing of words.
"Also, who gave you our new address and how can you just show up unannounced?" Isaac was failing at acting relaxed.
"Hold on, give me a chance to answer you man. I just wanted to see Tanaka. No hidden agenda, no ulterior motives. I swear. I got this address and Tanaka's number from Belinda after the wedding. I noticed Tanaka arrived with her and so I asked her. I work with Belinda actually, I had no idea you guys were related. Small world" Trevor was derailing.
"Sorry, anyway, I couldn't have told Tanaka I was coming in advance because I can never get through to her phone. Not on Whatsapp, not through voice calls or SMSes, and it doesn't help that she's not a social media person either." He spoke calmly while picking the crumbs, one by one off his sweater.
"If you couldn't reach her, that means she didn't want to be reached. You can't just come here without warning, because you feel like it and decide you want to be a part of her life now. Just how obnoxious are you exactly?" Isaac was breathing heavily now. He was so protective of his sister, having gone through it with her when she faced hell.
"You have to leave Trevor. This is not a request. You have to leave before she gets here. You left her shattered and you know it. She's not yours to toy with anymore, so you should just forget about trying to play your games again... I know your type. You think you can flash your pretty teeth and buy your way through whatever you want... and you'd better stop trying to be charming with my mother." By this point, Isaac was hissing at him.
