The day went by simple enough. Classes were the easiest they'll ever be since it was the first day of school. But that didn't mean we already didn't have homework from some of the classes.
I hiked my bag further up my shoulder as I closed my locker and made my way out of the school quickly. I didn't say a word to anyone as I passed by and no one said a word to me. I made sure they didn't with my head bowed down and my golden-brown hair covering part of my face like a curtain.
I practically sprinted down the stairs and across the parking lot, after checking both right and left for cars, and climbed into my beat up 2005 Toyota Camry. It wasn't the best car out there but it did what it needed to do and had pretty great milage and power.
I carefully turned on the vehicle and made my way out of the parking lot, careful not to hit any pedestrians on the way. I didn't need that right now...or ever really.
I peeled out of the school with one final look in my rearview mirror, only to see Allison staring at my car from the bottom of the stairs. Her eyes looked a little sad but maybe that was just the distance playing a trick on my eyes.
I then focused on the road and made my way towards a very familiar location. There, I parked close to the entrance and found two young blondes sitting on the stairs playing rock-paper-scissors. I smiled fondly and then honked, making them jump in the air and look at me through the window.
Cindy glared at me while holding her hand over to her probably pounding heart while Caleb gave me a toothy grin and hoisted his backpack up, helping his twin off the ground as well. They both made their way over to me and I unlocked the car doors.
They both tumbled in the back and I slightly shook my head. Neither preferred to take shotgun when both were in the car with me. Singles, yes. Double, no. Maybe it was a twin thing.
"How was school?" I asked as I watched them buckle up before backing out of the parking lot.
"It was fantastic!" exclaimed Cindy while Caleb puffed.
"It was horrible!"
"Aw why little bro?" I asked as I gazed at him quickly from the mirror before focusing on the road again.
"Too many girls were hitting on him," teased Cindy and Caleb's mouth dropped open before he glared hard at her.
"You weren't supposed to say anything," he hissed. She stuck her tongue out and I chuckled.
"Is little Cal embarrassed?" I asked in a baby voice and he directed his glare at me. I then laughed before slowing down at a stop light. "Kidding. But in all honesty, did you guys have a good day?" I asked and they nodded.
"Yeah, we did," they both replied at the same time and I smiled warmly.
These two were young. Too young to have sadness in their eyes. I wasn't necessarily the one they wanted to share the news too. But I was the only one listening. The only one around. The only one willing to put aside my own life and take care of them.
