Chapter Thirty-Eight

Know Thy Enemy

"So Isobel just showed up at their front doorstep?" I asked Stefan. He and I were in the car on our way to Elena's. Isobel stopped by there after Alaric said that she was dead and now Jenna knows that Isobel is alive and that we all knew about her.

"Pretty much. So we're going to find out what she's doing there." Stefan said.

Stefan got off of the phone with Caroline. They were talking about how Matt now knows that she's a vampire and he ran off.

"This is bad. Between Isobel and Jenna and now Matt, this is disaster bad." Elena said as the three of us sat down in her room.

"Yea."

John walked into the room, "Elena and Ellie, can you two come downstairs, please? We need to talk."

Elena laughed. "We have nothing to say to you."

"Please. It's important. You, too, Stefan." We gave each other looks then walked downstairs. When we got down, Isobel came towards us.

"I asked John for a do-over." She said.

Elena and I look towards John. "You invited her in?" I asked him.

"She has information about Klaus." He said. "Please, just listen to her, okay?"

We looked at Stefan. "All right. What do you know?" He asked.

"Since I was last here, I've been doing everything possible to find Klaus. We knew our best chance was to find him before he could find you two." Isobel explained.

"Best chance at what?" Stefan asked.

"Keeping Elena and Ellie alive." John answered.

"You don't get to talk, okay, not after everything you've done." Elena said upset to John.

"Were you able to find Klaus?" I asked.

"No. Nobody knows where he is, but there are these rumors that are flying around that a doppelgänger and banshee exist." Isobel said.

"Which means any vampire that wants to get in favor with Klaus will be lining up to capture you both." John added.

Elena and I looked at each other.

"I'm not buying any of this." She said. "The last time you were here, you made it clear that you didn't give a damn about us. Now all of a sudden I'm supposed to believe that you want to help?"

"Isobel's been helping all along." John said. "Klaus has been obsessed with finding Katherine for centuries. All it would take was any one of those 1864 tomb vampires to spread the word around that Katherine was still alive, and it would bring him straight here to Mystic Falls, where you were bound to be discovered, so we killed them."

"And almost killed me, Stefan and Damon in the process and killed my father." I said with anger.

"I have a safe house that I can take you to. The deed is in both of your names. No vampire can get in without your permission, not even me." Isobel said. "Let me help you."

"You wanna help?" Elena asked. Isobel nodded. "Then get the hell out of my house."

"Do you really think that Isobel's telling the truth that word's gotten out about the doppelgänger and banshee?" Elena asked. Stefan, Elena, Damon and I were at Stefan and Damon's sitting on their couch.

"Look, I don't trust a word that she says, but I think we'd be stupid to ignore the warning." Stefan said.

"You two should just stay here. It's better for us to keep an eye on you both." Damon suggested.
