Emma POV
Black. That's all I can see all around me. "James!" I call out into the darkness. No response. James has been my best friend ever since we were put into the experiment. We are both Flyers, powerless in the darkness, and I fear for both of us. "James!" I call out again. I begin to panic. Where is h- "Emma, I'm right here." He takes my hand in his. It's warm and soft, and I relax immediately. "We need to find Gretchen and David." The lanterns. He pulls me behind him as we tumble through the darkness, calling out their names. "David! Gretchen! Where are you guys?!" There are no responses for a very long time, when finally out of the black we heard Gretchen's soft whisper. "I'm right here." She says meekly. And then she turns on her light.
The brightness engulfs the room, and everyone springs into action. We all stand up and walk to the clear exit. It was all too easy. "What's going on?" I whisper to James. "I don't know let's just... Walk? I guess?" We set off towards the wall. "Something's going to happen." I say quietly. And almost as if on cue, the doorway to the next arena starts closing. There's about 100 yards between us and the door, which is closing at a rapid pace. We'll never make it. But I still take off at full speed towards the closing door, the rest of the group following. But the second Gretchen and David start running, the lights go out. "We can't run and light at the same time!" Says David. Crap. "We'll just have to run in the dark. Come on!" I yell, and once again we start sprinting towards the quickly closing exit.
I can now see the light from the next arena glowing brightly. "Come on guys we're almost there. Someone grabs my arm. It's Lauren, the Mover. It's too late. The walls are already closed. "I just had an idea. Conner and I can try to pry open the doors with our minds." Of course! "Guys could we have some light?" I shout to David and Gretchen. They light up the room immediately, and Lauren and Connor have already gotten to work. They are both staring at the walls with so much focus. And sure enough, the walls slide open. We pile through into the next arena.
