It was 11:52 PM in New York City. The cold November air blew flyers and newspaper clippings down the streets. The date on those newspapers read November 29, 2010.

"Get off of me!" A voice shrieked through the shadows of a dark Brooklyn alley. Matthew Steele stopped dead in his tracks.

"Did you hear that?" He asked his bestfriend, Natalie Walker.

"Don't worry about it Matt, happens all the time on this side of the city." Matt was used to the Upper East Side, where he grew up.

   "No, Nat. You don't underst-"

"HELP!" The cry for help was even louder, coming from the alleyway only 20 feet away from the pair.

"Natalie," Matthew began to sprint, "That sounds like my mom."

He bolted down the dark street, Natalie trailing closly behind.

They darted around the ominous corner, only to come face to face with the one thing Matt hoped wasn't there. His mother.

"Get off of her!" Matt charged at the man who was ripping his mother's clothes off. He wildly threw punches into the air, trying as hard as he could to strike the stranger. Natalie stood in fear from what was happening in front of her eyes. Matt's mother ran to Natalie, gesturing for her to run, but she was paralyzed. The stranger was much taller and stronger than Matt was. He didn't stand a chance.

Time seemed to slow down. Those 10 seconds felt like 10 hours. Natalie watched as the man pulled a gun from his waistline. She just stood there as he pulled the trigger. And her heart stopped as her best, and only, friend collapsed.

Bang.
