The room was dark, the only light was the trickle of sunlight coming through the window. It smelled old, and musky, like a stereotypical grandma's house.
Natalie stood outside of the room, looking through the window. Inside, Matt was laying on the dirty ground, dressed in a business suit. Black slacks, polished shoes, blazer, sky blue shirt, and a red paisley tie. He looked up at Natalie.
"Help me." His blue eyes drawing tears.
She tried desperately to open the window but it just wouldn't move.
Matt stood up, "I said, HELP ME!" He shouted and slammed on the window from the other side. Nat backed away, frightened. He continued to throw punches at the glass, but it wouldn't crack.
The scene shifted, and she was back in the Brooklyn alleyway, 5 years ago. Matt was flailing his arms at the rapist, and he pulled out a gun.
Natalie felt a tug on her arm. "Help him." She looked down and saw Matt's mom, Anna, on her hands and knees, tears streaming down her face. "Help him! HELP HIM!" She was screaming at her, begging Natalie to save her son.
Bang.
Natalie's body shot up, gasping for a breath. Her body was shaking, unable to maintain itself. She's been having the same nightmare for the last 5 years, same dark room, same alleyway.
Her eyes focused to the edge of her bed, where a shadow was looming over her. The figure moved into the stream of moonlight coming in from her bedroom window.
"Matty?" Nat blinked, trying to focus her eyes.
"Shh," He said, caressing her cheek, "It was just a dream, go to sleep."
"But, why are you here?" She asked.
"I'm protecting my best friend. Now go to sleep."
"Goodnight Matty, I love you." She layed back down and closed her eyes.
"I love you more." He pulled the blankets up around her delicate body. "I always have."
