Inside a dark hallway, a young girl laid upon a dirty floor in a cell with her hands chained above her head. Her silver grey hair shined in the darkness as well as her bright green eyes that were shining with unshed tears as she heard the screams and cries of other prisoners.
Softly she started humming. She grew louder and louder then started singing softly.
'Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again'As she was singing, the screams and cries softened to hear her soft voice that brought some light to their darkness.
'Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence'She paused to take a breath and continued with a bit more volume.
'In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence'She raised her voice even louder as she put more soul into her song.
'And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share
And no one dared
Disturb the sound of silence'She paused and sang out even louder, pouring out her soul to brighten the darkness that they were all trapped in.
'Fools, said I, you do not know
Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you
But my words, like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence'She threw her head up to face the ceiling to make her voice echo and carry farther, as she continued singing.
'And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said, the words of the prophets are written on the alley walls
And tenement halls
And whispered in the sounds of silence'At the last 3 words, her voice died down to a hearable whisper. As her voice exited the empty hallways, another pain-filled scream echoed and restarted the rest of them.
She sighed as she shut her eyes to fall into a sleep, dreading what would happen to her when she awoke. For she knew that after 11 years, no one was looking for her. No one would rescue her.
Unknown to her, a shadow passed her cell, laughing as he passed.
"Ku, ku, ku, ku."
