The moment the freezing hand touched me I whipped myself around stabbing the knife into its leg. It was then that I looked up and didn't see a void of eyes that I could fall into. I saw blue. Not just blue, the darkest yet brightest blue I have ever seen.
"Ahh!" It was a man alright. An alive one. I stuffed my hand over his mouth
"Shut up! Do you want to get us killed?" I whispered more violently than I meant.
"Evidentially you want me killed," he smiled a bit.
"I thought you were one of them Dark eyed things," was he actually trying to make jokes? Then he was staring at me. Probably because I dosed off "Do you really think right nows a good time to be making jokes?" I say this yet his happiness through this is my only spark to keep me going.
"The name is Zayne," he chuckled. "We have to keep laughing otherwise depression would kill us all," he smirked at me. "You should give it a try sometime," how he was resistant to the pain shooting inside his leg? I'm not quite sure. That might change, I grabbed the knife out of his leg. "Ooch," he said and his brows knitted into a firm 'v'. But only for a second until they return to there normal position. "I think we have a friend," he said and pointed up. Above me stood the monster, I kicked it in the chest. Out of the corner of my eye I see Zayne crawling to the cash register. "I can help the next in line," he said sarcastically but I got it. He wanted me to go to the register and the. He'd get the menace with the sharp ends of the stool he sat on.
"I believe that's me," I said smiling brighter than anything in this store. Except him. I'm still smiling as I run towards the register. He's laughing, I'm laughing everything seems okay until I get to the register "Go ahead and whack 'em!" I cheered.
"What?" He was confused. He didn't have a plan after all. I just look at him with a blank face as I get out my knife. "Sorry?" He said. Clueless boy. Quickly kill is what I'm after, simply walk up penetrate its skull with my knife and be on my way. Easy? Nothing is easy. I walk up, as planned but it grabbed my shoulders not allowing me to move my arms. So I kneed it which loosened its grip on me then smashing the but of the knife into the upper left part of it's face. It crippled over hunched there I stabbed it in back of the skull and the lifeless (once again) body smashed into the floor. Knelt down next to the body I whisper "I'm sorry," the words that Bryce couldn't finish, I got to finish for him.
"Did you think I have a plan?" Zayne asked.
"Uhm. Yes, I did," I said back with a small grin. "Can I ask where I am?"
"Of course you can ask, the real question is do you want to know?" He walked so slowly to me. Grabbed an apple that was loose from my back pack and threw it into the air.
"I want to know," I was too insistent, but I didn't care. "Back to the names, I'm Wren,"
"Well songbird, you're in the apocalypse! Surprise!" He had little jazz hands around the 'surprise'.
"What?!"
"Yeah, zombie-like creatures roam around the earth now,"
"And, songbird?" This name surprised me.
"Of course, a wren is a songbird if I'm not mistaken," Of course he wasn't mistaken. My parents were basically hippies.
"We should probably leave here," gesturing towards the door where you could clearly see stars,"
"Come with me," Should I? "There is a house, full of survivors. I'm here as a quick run for them," my mom never told me to go to a guys house that I just met. But this is just a bit different.
"Yeah. Sounds cool," he smiled at this. I smiled at him. With that we started out into the night. We talked the whole way there then we walked. Well, I walked. He limped. Into the driveway of a house with all boarded up windows.
"The ostriches have laid their eggs," Zayne said this so casually into the door. It was a code that basically says 'Hey! I'm human, I don't want to eat your face off so let me in.' The code worked and a woman unlocked the door and opened it. Her face was full of disgust.
"Who's she," Her face wasn't the only disgusting thing about her. Her attitude is just as ugly as she is.
"Sammi," Zayne scolded her. "You slut," I was taken aback by how he treated her. "You will shut up, or get out," Sammi is a witch. I was about to stay here with her. Zayne pushed past her and stepped in. I followed in his footsteps. In the room, about 5 people were sitting around a small candle talking. When I walked in, Sammi joined them and all their attention came to me. I got the opposite of the treatment Sammi gave me from the others. They all smiled and gestured for me to join the candle-party. My fave turned into pure joy. I sat there while they questioned me on stuff. Pointless stuff. Then Zayne inquired in "Sing for us," everybody perked up at this.
"What?" But they insisted further. A guy picked up a guitar. Since I knew they weren't going to let this gone. "Uhm, do you know 'Dirty Paws' by Of Monsters and Men?" The guitarist seemed extremely pleasured at this and he started playing the music. I started singing.
Everybody crowded around the candle were swaying or smiling. I was reaching the core, the heart, of the song when the banging at the door began.
