You are on a camping trip with your best friend, Sam. It's only the two of you, because your friends bailed out last minute. You're nervous about it, but you've been friends since you were three, so it shouldn't be a big deal. It is, though, because lately, you've been starting to have romantic feelings for Sam, mostly blocking them out. But you noticed how perfect his eyes were, the way he smiled, all of the little things he did. And he was on your mind 24/7.
On the way to the campground, you listen to Ed Sheeran in Sam's old truck, singing along to all the words with Sam. You watch him sing, noticing how his jawline moves. Once you get there, you unload the trunk, mostly watching Sam do everything. He jokingly accuses you of being lazy, and that earns him a playful smack on the arm. Usually, there aren't many people in the campgrounds, but there are a few today. So, you and Sam venture out deeper into the woods away from the others.
As you get farther into the dark woods, you protest, "Sammmm I don't wanna go this far."
"It's okay, (Y/N). I'll protect you from all the monsters....or serial killers," he says seriously.
"Stop!" you exclaim, hitting him with one of your bags. He smiles back at you and keeps walking until he finds a small clearing in the trees. Stopping, he grins, "Perfect."
You put all your bags down and put up the tent. Once you see it, you realize how small it is for two people.
"Um..." you start, "it's small."
"So?" Sam questions, "We're best friends, (Y/N), and it's going to be colder during the night. We can snuggle." He smiles wide at you, and starts setting up the blankets.
Butterflies flit around in your stomach with the thought of snuggling with him.
"Yeah...and you're going to protect me from those serial killers right?" You try to feel more comfortable.
He laughs, and you begin unpacking everything else from your bags, and once everything is set up, you make a fire. You and Sam talk over s'mores and hot chocolate. Then, he asks you a question, "Have you ever thought about what it'd be like if we were together."
It caught you off guard, and as you sputter to find an answer, then you lie, "Um. Not really? I mean we're best friends right, I think of us as friends."
"Oh. Yeah. Totally." Sam answers, looking down.
The sunlight finally dies, and you put out the fire and climb into the tent with Sam. It was a tight fit but you both manage to just fit. You fall asleep next to Sam, comfortable.
A loud bang jolts you out of your sleep, and you scream, grabbing hold of Sam's arm.
"What happened...?" he questions sleepily.
"There was a noise. You didn't hear that?" you breathe nervously.
"No, but I'll go check it out."
Sam leaves the tent and you wait as he checks outside.
He comes back, laughing, "There's nothing out there...but I'll keep you safe anyway."
Suddenly, he grabs your arms and kisses you. It's wonderful-slow, sweet, intimate-now that you realize it, it's all you've ever wanted. It was perfect.
Once you break from the kiss, Sam breathes, "Wow. I've always wanted to do that."
He stares at you with intensity and says, "Let's make this camping trip one you'll never forget."
